Construction Update – Week of April 11th

South of Whipple Avenue: This week, construction activities on U.S. 101 from San Antonio Road (in Palo Alto) to Whipple Avenue (in Redwood City) include landscaping work and minor construction activities.

North of Whipple Avenue: This week, construction activities on U.S. 101 from Whipple Avenue to I-380 (in South San Francisco) include pavement restriping near the completed sections of sound wall on Bayshore Boulevard in the City of San Mateo (more information below); installation of stormwater drainage systems, temporary concrete barriers, new electrical boxes, lighting, traffic monitoring system components, median electrical components, overhead sign foundations, and guardrails; concrete and barrier demolition; landscaping and erosion control work; electrical service work; grading; paving; and drainage system maintenance.

Most of the work will occur on the freeway lanes, median, shoulders, and ramps. Pavement restriping will occur near the completed sections of sound wall and electrical service work will occur on city streets adjacent to U.S. 101. Construction activities may occur during the day or night, and noise from construction-related sounds such as backup alarms and hammering should be anticipated.

Sound Wall Update – Bayshore Blvd Restriping Work Expected to Begin week of April 11th
All three sections of sound wall along Bayshore Boulevard, from Newbridge Avenue to just past Dakota Avenue, from 2nd Avenue to Dore Avenue, and from Dore Avenue to East Poplar Avenue, in the City of San Mateo have been rebuilt.

Please note, pavement restriping near the completed sections of the sound wall, previously scheduled to take place the week of March 21st,  is currently scheduled to occur the week of April 11th. This work will require temporary lane closures (one-way traffic) on Bayshore Boulevard between 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Cones and flaggers will safely direct traffic around closures. On-street parking along Bayshore Boulevard will be unavailable until this work is complete. We appreciate the continued patience of the residents and nearby travelers as we near the end of sound wall-related work.

Nighttime Freeway Lane Closures: Nightly freeway lane closures may occur on northbound and southbound U.S. 101 from 7:00 PM to 6:30 AM, Sunday night to Friday morning. Due to low traffic volumes, project-related traffic delays are anticipated to be minimal. Caltrans continues to monitor the flow of traffic and make adjustments, as necessary.

Freeway Ramp Closures: Temporary ramp closures in both the northbound and southbound directions of the freeway may occur during the night. However, consecutive interchanges for northbound and southbound ramps will not be closed at the same time.

Nighttime ramp closures: Short-term nighttime ramp closures may occur at the following locations (listed from south to north) during the week of April 11th (between Sunday night and Friday morning), in/near the cities of Redwood City, San Carlos, San Mateo, and San Bruno. Changeable message signs near the ramps will have exact closure times and locations.

North of Whipple Avenue:

  • Westbound Whipple Avenue, Southbound U.S. 101 On-Ramp
  • Southbound U.S. 101, Eastbound/Westbound Holly Street Off-Ramp
  • Northbound U.S. 101, Kehoe Avenue Off-Ramp
  • Eastbound/Westbound 3rd/4th Avenue, Southbound U.S. 101 On-Ramp
  • Northbound U.S. 101, Eastbound/Westbound 3rd Avenue Off-Ramp
  • Southbound U.S. 101, Southbound Poplar Avenue Off-Ramp
  • Northbound U.S. 101, Eastbound San Bruno Avenue Off-Ramp

Nighttime ramp closures:

  • Will be displayed on changeable message signs within the construction zone
  • Will begin after 7:00 PM and reopen by 6:00 AM, unless otherwise noted above
  • Will have detour signs posted

City Streets: In addition to the sound wall activities described above, work to connect power to overhead signs and freeway lighting may occur on streets in the cities of San Mateo, San Bruno, and South San Francisco. Nearby residents and travelers can expect to see crews from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. This work will produce intermittent low vibrations and construction vehicle noise, and will also require temporary lane closures (one-way traffic). Cones and flaggers will safely direct traffic around closures. This work will also include PG&E energizing utility connection points and installing meters on city streets adjacent to the freeway. Electrical service work may occur at the following locations:

  • Cypress Avenue in the City of San Mateo
  • Santa Inez Avenue in the City of San Mateo
  • East 4th Avenue and South Humboldt Street in the City of San Mateo
  • San Bruno Avenue and 7th Avenue in the City of San Bruno
  • Terminal Court and Produce Avenue in the City of South San Francisco

Upcoming Construction (North of Whipple Avenue): Construction activities in the coming weeks on U.S. 101 from Whipple Avenue to I-380 (in South San Francisco) will include the installation of electrical boxes, guardrails, stormwater drainage systems, traffic monitoring system components, lighting, overhead sign foundations, and median electrical components; grading; paving; erosion control work; concrete and barrier demolition; roadway excavation; stormwater drainage system maintenance; electrical service work; and minor construction activities.

All construction activities are subject to change without notice.
