**NOTICE: OVERNIGHT closures on U.S. 101 will take place during the week of February 28th. See below for more details, or visit the “Upcoming Overnight Closures on U.S. 101” page on 101express.com.

Construction Update – Week of February 28th

REMINDER: OVERNIGHT CLOSURES on U.S. 101 – Week of February 28th from 11:00 PM to 4:00 AM
Caltrans will be replacing five overhead sign structures on U.S. 101, which will require construction crews to close one direction of the freeway at a time between Millbrae Avenue in the City of Millbrae and South Airport Boulevard in the City of South San Francisco for five nights during the week of February 28th (from 11:00 PM to 4:00 AM), when traffic volumes are usually light. Motorists are advised to be familiar with the proposed detour routes and allow for extra travel time.

Freeway Closures:
Southbound U.S. 101 from South Airport Boulevard to San Bruno Avenue is anticipated to be closed overnight on Sunday, February 28th, Monday, March 1st, and Tuesday, March 2nd to safely remove three sign structures.
Northbound U.S. 101 from Millbrae Avenue to San Bruno Avenue is anticipated to be closed overnight on Wednesday, March 3rd and Thursday, March 4th to safely remove two sign structures.
Closure locations and times will be displayed on changeable message signs at least one week in advance. At no point will both the northbound and southbound directions of U.S. 101 be closed at the same time.

Detour Routes:
Click here to visit the “Upcoming Overnight Closures on U.S. 101” page on 101express.com for detailed maps of the exact detour routes.

South of Whipple Avenue: This week, construction activities on U.S. 101 from San Antonio Road (in Palo Alto) to Whipple Avenue (in Redwood City) include variable toll message sign work, shoulder excavation, landscaping work, and minor construction activities.

North of Whipple Avenue: This week, construction activities on U.S. 101 from Whipple Avenue to I-380 (in South San Francisco) include removal of overhead signs which will require overnight closures on U.S. 101 (more information above); continued work near the completed sections of sound wall on Bayshore Boulevard in the City of San Mateo (more information below); installation of temporary freeway signs, stormwater drainage systems, permanent and temporary concrete barriers, weigh-in-motion systems for measuring vehicle weights, new electrical boxes, lighting, traffic monitoring system components, and guardrails; temporary restriping; concrete and barrier demolition; overhead sign work; landscaping and erosion control work; electrical service work; grading; paving; roadway excavation; removing temporary concrete barriers; and minor construction activities.

Most of the work will occur on the freeway lanes, shoulders, and ramps, while sound wall work and electrical service work will occur on city streets adjacent to U.S. 101. Construction activities may occur during the day or night, and noise from construction-related sounds such as backup alarms and hammering should be anticipated.

Sound Wall Work – Final Section Rebuilt! The final section of sound wall, from 2nd Avenue to Dore Avenue in the City of San Mateo, has been rebuilt. Minor construction activities, such as paving,  will continue to occur near the completed sections of sound wall on Bayshore Boulevard (from Newbridge Avenue to just past Dakota Avenue, from 2nd Avenue to Dore Avenue, and from Dore Avenue to East Poplar Avenue) in the City of San Mateo. This work may require periodic traffic control between 8:00 AM and 5:00PM, from Monday to Friday. We anticipate all sound wall-related work will conclude by mid-March.

Nighttime Freeway Lane Closures: Nightly freeway lane closures may occur on northbound and southbound U.S. 101 from 7:00 PM to 6:30 AM, Sunday night to Friday morning. Due to low traffic volumes, project-related traffic delays are anticipated to be minimal. Caltrans continues to monitor the flow of traffic and make adjustments, as necessary.

Freeway Ramp Closures: Temporary ramp closures may occur during the day or night. Ramp closures could occur in both the northbound and southbound directions of the freeway. However, consecutive interchanges for northbound and southbound ramps will not be closed at the same time.

Daytime ramp closures: Short-term daytime ramp closures are possible the week of February 28th (between Monday morning and Thursday afternoon) in the City of San Mateo at the following location. Closures will begin after 8:30 AM and end by 4:30 PM. Changeable message signs near the ramps will have exact closure times and locations:

  • Northbound U.S. 101, Eastbound Dore Avenue Off-Ramp

Work Shifting to the Median: Construction crews continue to shift work from the outside (freeway shoulder) to the inside (freeway median). We anticipate that this shift will mean less lane closures and ramp closures in the future. Drivers may notice construction crews moving temporary concrete barriers into the median over the next few months. Additionally, construction crews will be adding new striping and reflective safety markers between all freeway lanes. The number of lanes available to drivers will not change. Click here, or on the image to the left, to watch an informative video on this subject!

City Streets: In addition to the sound wall activities described above, work to connect power to overhead signs and freeway lighting will occur on city streets in the cities of San Mateo, San Bruno, and South San Francisco. Nearby residents and travelers can expect to see crews from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. This work will produce intermittent low vibrations and construction vehicle noise, and will also require temporary lane closures (one-way traffic). Cones and flaggers will safely direct traffic around closures. Electrical service work may occur near the following intersections:

  • On 19th Avenue in the City of San Mateo
  • 19th Avenue and Fashion Island Boulevard in the City of San Mateo
  • San Bruno Avenue and 7th Avenue in the City of San Bruno
  • South Airport Boulevard and Wondercolor Lane in the City of South San Francisco
  • On South Airport Boulevard in the City of South San Francisco

All construction activities are subject to change without notice.
