**Note: Daytime retaining wall work and ramp closures in the City of San Mateo and nighttime pile driving work in/near the cities of Belmont and San Carlos may occur the week of January 17th. Construction Update – Week of January 17th

South of Whipple Avenue: This week, construction activities on U.S. 101 from San Antonio Road (in Palo Alto) to Whipple Avenue (in Redwood City) will include the installation of variable toll message signs and other minor construction activities.

North of Whipple Avenue: This week, construction activities on U.S. 101 from Whipple Avenue to I-380 (in South San Francisco) will include continued work near the removed sound wall along Bayshore Boulevard (from 2nd Avenue to Dore Avenue) within the City of San Mateo; nighttime pile driving in/near the cities of Belmont and San Carlos; and daytime retaining wall work in the City of San Mateo. Additional work will include the installation of stormwater drainage systems, overhead signs, and guardrail; grading; paving; shoulder and roadway excavation; stormwater drainage system maintenance; erosion control work; overhead sign work; removing guardrail; and other related construction activities.

Most of the work will occur on the freeway lanes, shoulders, and ramps, while sound wall work will occur on city streets adjacent to U.S. 101. More information is provided below.

Daytime Retaining Wall Work in the City of San Mateo

Construction crews will continue to install the foundation of a retaining wall using a hydraulic hammer (also known as pile driving) on Southbound U.S. 101, south of the on-ramp from East Hillsdale Boulevard in the City of San Mateo. This work is scheduled to take place from 1:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Noise and vibration from the intermittent use of a hydraulic hammer as well as other common construction-related sounds such as backup alarms should be anticipated. We estimate this work will conclude by the end of the week.

In addition, the closure of Eastbound East Hillsdale Boulevard to Southbound U.S. 101 On-Ramp and Westbound East Hillsdale Boulevard to Southbound U.S. 101 On-Ramp will be required for safety reasons.

Nighttime Pile Driving Work in/near the Cities of Belmont and San Carlos

Construction crews will be pile driving adjacent to the Harbor Boulevard, Southbound U.S. 101 On-Ramp in/near the cities of Belmont and San Carlos. Travelers may see construction crews between the hours of 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM. Noise and vibration from intermittent pile driving as well as other common construction-related sounds such as backup alarms should be anticipated. This work is scheduled to take place over 1 working night once initiated and is anticipated to be completed by the end of the week.

Sound Wall Work: Construction crews working on the sound wall on Bayshore Boulevard, from 2nd Avenue to Dore Avenue in the City of San Mateo, continue to implement periodic traffic control from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Watch for detour signs. After 5:00 PM, the road will be restored to two-way traffic. We estimate this work will conclude in February.

Nighttime Freeway Lane Closures: Nightly freeway lane closures may occur on northbound and southbound U.S. 101 from 7:00 PM to 6:30 AM, Sunday night to Saturday morning. Due to low traffic volumes, project-related traffic delays are anticipated to be minimal. Caltrans continues to monitor the flow of traffic and make adjustments, as necessary.

Freeway Ramp Closures: Temporary ramp closures may occur during the day or night. Ramp closures could occur in both the northbound and southbound directions of the freeway. However, consecutive interchanges for northbound and southbound ramps will not be closed at the same time.
