Construction Update – Week of February 21st

Video 11 thumbnail
Work Shifting to the Median: Construction crews are beginning to shift work from the outside (freeway shoulders) to the inside (freeway median). We anticipate that this shift will mean less lane closures and ramp closures in the future. Drivers may notice construction crews moving temporary concrete barriers into the median over the next few months. Additionally, construction crews will be adding new striping and reflective safety markers between all freeway lanes. The number of lanes available to drivers will not change. Click here, or on the image to the left, to watch an informative video on this subject!

**Note: OVERNIGHT closures on U.S. 101 will take place during the week of February 28th. See below for more details. or visit the “Upcoming Overnight Closures on U.S. 101” page on 101express.com.

South of Whipple Avenue: This week, construction activities on U.S. 101 from San Antonio Road (in Palo Alto) to Whipple Avenue (in Redwood City) include variable toll message sign work and minor construction activities.

North of Whipple Avenue: This week, construction activities on U.S. 101 from Whipple Avenue to I-380 (in South San Francisco) include installation of stormwater drainage systems, permanent and temporary concrete barriers, weigh-in-motion systems for measuring vehicle weights, new electrical boxes, streetlights on freeway ramps, and guardrails; temporary restriping; concrete and barrier demolition; stormwater drainage system maintenance; overhead sign work; shoulder excavation; landscaping work; erosion control work; electrical service work; and minor construction activities.

Construction crews will also be working on the sound wall on Bayshore Boulevard (from 2nd Avenue to Dore Avenue) and near the completed sections of sound wall on Bayshore Boulevard (from Newbridge Avenue to just past Dakota Avenue and from Dore Avenue to East Poplar Avenue) in the City of San Mateo. Additional information about this work is provided below the blue box under the heading Sound Wall Work.

Most of the work will occur on the freeway lanes, shoulders, and ramps, while sound wall work and electrical service work will occur on city streets adjacent to U.S. 101. Construction activities may occur during the day or night, and noise from construction-related sounds such as backup alarms and hammering should be anticipated.

OVERNIGHT CLOSURES on U.S. 101 – Week of February 28th from 11:00 PM to 4:00 AM

Caltrans will be replacing five overhead sign structures on U.S. 101, which will require construction crews to close one direction of the freeway at a time between Millbrae Avenue in the City of Millbrae and South Airport Boulevard in the City of South San Francisco for five nights during the week of February 28th (from 11:00 PM to 4:00 AM), when traffic volumes are usually light. Motorists are advised to be familiar with the proposed detour routes and allow for extra travel time.

Freeway Closures:

  • Southbound U.S. 101 from South Airport Boulevard to San Bruno Avenue is anticipated to be closed overnight on Sunday, February 28th, Monday, March 1st, and Tuesday, March 2nd to safely remove three sign structures.
  • Northbound U.S. 101 from Millbrae Avenue to San Bruno Avenue is anticipated to be closed overnight on Wednesday, March 3rd and Thursday, March 4th to safely remove two sign structures.
  • Closure locations and times will be displayed on changeable message signs at least one week in advance. At no point will both the northbound and southbound directions of U.S. 101 be closed at the same time.

Detour Routes:
Click here to visit the “Upcoming Overnight Closures on U.S. 101” page on 101express.com for detailed maps of the exact detour routes.

Sound Wall Work: Construction crews working on the sound wall on Bayshore Boulevard, from 2nd Avenue to Dore Avenue in the City of San Mateo, continue to implement periodic traffic control from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Watch for detour signs. After 5:00 PM, the road will be restored to two-way traffic. We anticipate this section of sound wall to be rebuilt by late-February and minor construction activities such as paving near the sound wall to conclude by mid-March.

Construction crews will also be working near the completed sections of sound wall on Bayshore Boulevard (from Newbridge Avenue to just past Dakota Avenue and from Dore Avenue to East Poplar Avenue) in the City of San Mateo. This work will include minor construction activities such as paving, and may require periodic traffic control between 8:00 AM and 5:00PM, from Monday to Friday. We anticipate all sound wall-related work will conclude by mid-March.

Nighttime Freeway Lane Closures: Nightly freeway lane closures may occur on northbound and southbound U.S. 101 from 7:00 PM to 6:30 AM, Sunday night to Friday morning.
