**Note: An OVERNIGHT closure on Northbound U.S. 101 will take place on Sunday, April 4th. See below for more details or visit the “Upcoming Overnight Closures on U.S. 101” page on 101express.com for more information.

Construction Update – Week of April 4th

REMINDER: OVERNIGHT CLOSURE on Northbound U.S. 101 (from East Hillsdale Boulevard to SR-92) – Sunday, April 4th from 11:00 PM to Monday, April 5th at 4:00 AM

An overnight closure on Northbound U.S. 101 is required to remove an overhead sign structure between East Hillsdale Boulevard and SR-92, in/near the cities of San Mateo and Foster City. This will occur beginning on Sunday, April 4th at 11:00 PM to Monday, April 5th at 4:00 AM, when traffic volumes are usually light. Detour signs will be in place to clearly guide motorists through city streets until they can safely get back on the freeway. Motorists are advised to be familiar with the detour routes and allow extra travel time. The closure location and time will be displayed on changeable message signs at least one week in advance of the closure.

Detour Routes:

Check the “Upcoming Overnight Closures on U.S. 101” page on 101express.com for a detailed map of the exact detour routes.

South of Whipple Avenue: This week, construction activities on U.S. 101 from San Antonio Road (in Palo Alto) to Whipple Avenue (in Redwood City) include landscaping work and minor construction activities.

North of Whipple Avenue: This week, construction activities on U.S. 101 from Whipple Avenue to I-380 (in South San Francisco) include pavement restriping near the completed sections of sound wall on Bayshore Boulevard in the City of San Mateo (more information below), an overnight freeway closure on Northbound U.S. 101 in/near the cities of San Mateo and Foster City to remove an overhead sign structure; installation of stormwater drainage systems, temporary concrete barriers, new electrical boxes, lighting, traffic monitoring system components, median electrical components and guardrails; temporary restriping of pavement; concrete and barrier demolition; overhead sign work; landscaping and erosion control work; electrical service work; roadway excavation; grading; paving; and drainage system maintenance.

Most of the work will occur on the freeway lanes, median, shoulders, and ramps. Pavement restriping will occur near the completed sections of sound wall and electrical service work will occur on city streets adjacent to U.S. 101. Construction activities may occur during the day or night, and noise from construction-related sounds such as backup alarms and hammering should be anticipated.

Sound Wall Update – Bayshore Blvd Restriping Work Delayed
All three sections of sound wall along Bayshore Boulevard, from Newbridge Avenue to just past Dakota Avenue, from 2nd Avenue to Dore Avenue, and from Dore Avenue to East Poplar Avenue, in the City of San Mateo have been rebuilt.

Please note, pavement restriping near the completed sections of the sound wall, previously scheduled to take place the week of March 21st, has been delayed, and is currently scheduled to occur the week of April 4th. This work will require temporary lane closures (one-way traffic) on Bayshore Boulevard between 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Cones and flaggers will safely direct traffic around closures. On-street parking along Bayshore Boulevard will be unavailable until this work is complete. We appreciate the continued patience of the residents and nearby travelers as we near the end of sound wall-related work.

Nighttime Freeway Lane Closures: Nightly freeway lane closures may occur on northbound and southbound U.S. 101 from 7:00 PM to 6:30 AM, Saturday night to Friday morning. Due to low traffic volumes, project-related traffic delays are anticipated to be minimal. Caltrans continues to monitor the flow of traffic and make adjustments, as necessary.

Freeway Ramp Closures: Temporary ramp closures in both the northbound and southbound directions of the freeway may occur during the day or night. However, consecutive interchanges for northbound and southbound ramps will not be closed at the same time.

Nighttime ramp closures: Short-term nighttime ramp closures may occur at the following locations (listed from south to north) during the week of April 4th (between Sunday night and Friday morning), in/near the cities of Redwood City, San Carlos, Belmont, San Mateo, Foster City, and San Bruno. Changeable message signs near the ramps will have exact closure times and locations.

Nearby residents and travelers can expect to see crews from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. This work will produce intermittent low vibrations and construction vehicle noise, and will also require temporary lane closures (one-way traffic). Cones and flaggers will safely direct traffic around closures. Electrical service work may occur at the following locations:
