Construction Update – Week of February 14th

South of Whipple Avenue: This week, construction activities on U.S. 101 from San Antonio Road (in Palo Alto) to Whipple Avenue (in Redwood City) include variable toll message sign work and minor construction activities.

North of Whipple Avenue: This week, construction activities on U.S. 101 from Whipple Avenue to I-380 (in South San Francisco) include installation of stormwater drainage systems, permanent and temporary concrete barriers, weigh-in-motion systems for measuring vehicle weights, new electrical boxes, and guardrails; temporary restriping; concrete and barrier demolition; grading; paving; stormwater drainage system maintenance; overhead sign work; shoulder excavation; landscaping work; erosion control work; and minor construction activities.

Construction crews will also be working on the sound wall on Bayshore Boulevard (from 2nd Avenue to Dore Avenue) and near the completed sections of sound wall on Bayshore Boulevard (from Newbridge Avenue to just past Dakota Avenue and from Dore Avenue to East Poplar Avenue) in the City of San Mateo. Additional information about this work is provided below.

Most of the work will occur on the freeway lanes, shoulders, and ramps, while sound wall work will occur on city streets adjacent to U.S. 101. More information is provided below. Construction activities may occur during the day or night, and noise from construction-related sounds such as backup alarms and hammering should be anticipated.

Sound Wall Work: Construction crews working on the sound wall on Bayshore Boulevard, from 2nd Avenue to Dore Avenue in the City of San Mateo, continue to implement periodic traffic control from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Watch for detour signs. After 5:00 PM, the road will be restored to two-way traffic. We anticipate this section of sound wall to be rebuilt by late-February and minor construction activities such as paving near the sound wall to conclude by mid-March.

Construction crews will also be working near the completed sections of sound wall on Bayshore Boulevard (from Newbridge Avenue to just past Dakota Avenue and from Dore Avenue to East Poplar Avenue) in the City of San Mateo. This work will include minor construction activities such as paving, and may require periodic traffic control between 8:00 AM and 5:00PM, from Monday to Friday. We anticipate all sound wall-related work will conclude by mid-March.

Nighttime Freeway Lane Closures: Nightly freeway lane closures may occur on northbound and southbound U.S. 101 from 7:00 PM to 6:30 AM, Sunday night to Saturday morning. Due to low traffic volumes, project-related traffic delays are anticipated to be minimal. Caltrans continues to monitor the flow of traffic and make adjustments, as necessary.

Freeway Ramp Closures: Temporary ramp closures may occur during the night. Ramp closures could occur in both the northbound and southbound directions of the freeway. However, consecutive interchanges for northbound and southbound ramps will not be closed at the same time.
