Construction Update – Week of March 14th

South of Whipple Avenue: This week, construction activities on U.S. 101 from San Antonio Road (in Palo Alto) to Whipple Avenue (in Redwood City) include shoulder excavation and minor construction activities.

North of Whipple Avenue: This week, construction activities on U.S. 101 from Whipple Avenue to I-380 (in South San Francisco) include continued work near the completed sections of sound wall on Bayshore Boulevard in the City of San Mateo (more information below); installation of stormwater drainage systems, permanent and temporary concrete barriers, new electrical boxes, lighting, traffic monitoring system components, and guardrails; temporary restriping; concrete and barrier demolition; overhead sign work; landscaping and erosion control work; electrical service work; shoulder excavation; removing temporary concrete barriers; grading; paving; modifying existing electrical cabinets; roadway excavation; stormwater drainage system maintenance; and minor construction activities.

Most of the work will occur on the freeway lanes, shoulders, and ramps, while sound wall work and electrical service work will occur on city streets adjacent to U.S. 101. Construction activities may occur during the day or night, and noise from construction-related sounds such as backup alarms and hammering should be anticipated.

Sound Wall Update

All three sections of sound wall along Bayshore Boulevard, from Newbridge Avenue to just past Dakota Avenue, from 2nd Avenue to Dore Avenue, and from Dore Avenue to East Poplar Avenue, in the City of San Mateo have been rebuilt!

Minor construction activities such as paving and restriping will continue near the completed sections of sound wall on Bayshore Boulevard in the City of San Mateo during the week of March 14th. This work will require temporary lane closures (one-way traffic) on Bayshore Boulevard between 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Cones and flaggers will safely direct traffic around closures. On-street parking along Bayshore Boulevard will be unavailable during this work. All sound wall-related work is anticipated to be completed next week (by March 19th).

OVERNIGHT FREEWAY CLOSURES FOR SIGN REMOVAL: In the coming weeks, an additional overnight closure on U.S. 101 will be required to remove an overhead sign structure in the City of San Mateo (between East Hillsdale boulevard and SR-92). Stay tuned to our weekly construction emails and visit the “Upcoming Overnight Closures on U.S. 101” page on 101express.com for updates as we work to finalize the timing for this closure. Thank you for your patience during this time!

Nighttime Freeway Lane Closures: Nightly freeway lane closures may occur on northbound and southbound U.S. 101 from 7:00 PM to 6:30 AM, Saturday night to Friday morning.
