San Francisco Freeway & Road Rehabilitation
Exciting new changes are in store for San Francisco’s roads and freeways which will create safer and smoother driving experiences for everyone who drives to, from, and in and around the San Francisco-Bay Area region. These new changes begin September 2024, when Caltrans D4 launches five major freeway and road rehabilitation projects along Bayshore and Central freeways-- US-101, I-280, and 19th Ave. (SR-1). These projects will be phased in over four years.
These rehabilitation projects will provide extensive repairs and upgrades to restore the structural integrity and enhance the safety of San Francisco’s most used freeways by motorists, where approximately 44,900 people travel daily.

Of the San Francisco freeway rehabilitation projects coming soon, four will rehabilitate San Francisco’s major freeway arteries. We refer to them as the Fab-4 Rehab projects which will create safer and smoother driving experiences in and around San Francisco. Two of these projects are taking place along the Bayshore and Central freeways US-101 and I-80. A third project will be the repaving of the entire 19th Avenue (SR-1) between the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco State University. And the fourth of these projects is the rebuilding of an outdated pedestrian overcrossing on the I-280 near Cayuga Park. Specific groundbreaking dates for these projects are coming soon.
