Exciting changes are underway on San Francisco’s roads and freeways, specifically on I-280, the U.S. 101 Hospital Curve, the Central Freeway, and SR-1 (19th Avenue). We call them the Fab 4! Each project will receive major repaving and rehabilitation, helping create safer, smoother driving experiences for everyone who drives to, from, and in and around the San Francisco Bay Area. Work has just begun on the U.S. 101 Hospital Curve of the Bayshore freeway, and on SR-1 (19th Avenue). The U.S. 101 Central freeway and SR-1 (19th Avenue) projects begin in Spring 2026 and Summer 2026, respectively.

These rehabilitation projects will provide extensive repairs and upgrades to restore the structural integrity and enhance the safety of San Francisco’s most used freeways by motorists, where approximately 44,900 people travel daily.

Caltrans has launched a major effort to revitalize San Francisco’s most used roads and freeways. We refer to them as the Fab-4 Rehab projects which will create safer and smoother driving experiences in and around San Francisco. Two of these projects are taking place along the Bayshore and Central freeways US-101 and I-80. A third project will be the repaving of the entire 19th Avenue (SR-1) between the Golden Gate Park and San Francisco State University. And the fourth project is the rebuilding of an outdated pedestrian overcrossing on the I-280 near Cayuga Park.

Please read more below about each project. Visit here to learn more about these four important projects: Welcome to the Fab-4 Rehabilitation Projects Toolkit | Caltrans
