Exciting new changes are in store for San Francisco’s roads and freeways which will create safer and smoother driving experiences for everyone who drives to, from, and in and around the San Francisco-Bay Area region. These new changes begin September 2024, when Caltrans D4 launches five major freeway and road rehabilitation projects along Bayshore and Central freeways-- US-101, I-280, and 19th Ave. (SR-1). These projects will be phased in over four years.

These rehabilitation projects will provide extensive repairs and upgrades to restore the structural integrity and enhance the safety of San Francisco’s most used freeways by motorists, where approximately 44,900 people travel daily. This comprehensive overhaul will include repaving, bridge reinforcements, median barrier repairs, drainage upgrades, polyester overlays, a new pedestrian overcrossing, joint replacements, and much more to ensure long-term reliability for residents, students, visitors, and the people working in business and organizations throughout San Francisco.

Three of these projects are taking place along the Bayshore and Central freeways US-101 and I-80. Another project will rebuild an outdated pedestrian overcrossing on the I-280 freeway, and another project will repave the entirety of 19th Avenue (SR-1) between the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco State University. Read details about each of these exciting projects below.
