San Francisco US-101 Rehabilitation

What’s Happening?

The U.S. 101 (Hospital Curve) Rehabilitation Project will begin Fall 2025. It is a two-year effort to improve 15.4 lane miles of concrete pavement and upgrade drainage systems and median barrier on U.S. 101 between Candlestick Point Recreation Area and the Mission District in San Francisco. The project is expected to be completed in 2028.
When Is This Happening?
This project will be carried out in three focused segments:
Segment 3: Starting in October 2025, work will begin with traffic lanes in both directions shifted and the outside shoulder closed to allow for the replacement of drainage systems. This segment is expected to be completed by early 2028.
Segment 2: Beginning in Fall 2026 and continuing through late Spring 2027, work will focus primarily on the center median. Activities will include drainage system upgrades, replacement of the median barrier, and some isolated concrete pavement slab repairs.
Segment 1: Scheduled to begin in Spring 2027 and conclude in Fall 2027, this section will also involve work in the center median for drainage system upgrades and median barrier replacement, along with isolated concrete pavement slab repairs.
Why is the Necessary?
The concrete pavement in the project limits is reaching the end of its service life. The center medians are heavily damaged with visible fractures and cracks and must be modernized. Furthermore, this project will extend the lifespan of this 70-year-old roadway which will minimize the need for frequent repairs and will reduce future disruptions to commuters.
What about traffic impacts?
Lane reductions are necessary to create space for work activities. This project is located along sections where there is very limited shoulder access. Speed reduction is crucial for worker and motorist safety. The posted speed limit will be reduced. Most of the work will occur at night and on weekends, but motorists should plan extra time during the peak commute hours from approximately 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
Driver Benefits
Included in the rehabilitation will be re-paving of freeway on- and off- ramps, new signage, striping, and safety devices. The medians will be smoother and safer. With the completed project, motorists will experience a noticeably smoother driving experience with fewer rough patches and road bumps and roads less likely to flood.
