What’s New?

Map of 19th Avenue Paving and Rehabilitation Project

Caltrans is repaving State Route 1, also known as 19th Avenue in late summer 2025. This important rehabilitation project will restore all six lanes (north and southbound) between Lincoln Way at the Golden Gate Park and San Francisco State University at Holloway, totaling 18.8 lane miles.

Also Included in this project will be the repaving at the intersection of SR1, at Park Presidio Blvd., and California Street.

When is this Happening?

This entire project will be accomplished in two phases over the next year and a half. It will be completed by December 2026.

Phase 1: Parking strip repaving starts September/October 2025.

Phase 2: Full lane repaving begins Spring 2026.

Why is this Necessary?

This work is necessary to fix/remove potholes, repair unsound pavement and repave lanes. This work will improve ride quality, and maintain safe and connected travel route. Furthermore, residents and motorists have voiced their concerns about this road and have requested it be rehabilitated for some time. Caltrans heard the public’s call, and we’re responding.

What about traffic impacts?

Throughout the rehabilitation workdays will be limited to daytime hours, Monday-Friday from 7 AM-3 PM.

All work will be performed in block-by-block increments with one lane always available to motorists and to minimize traffic impact. The lane reductions will allow motorists to drive along the road. But, during lane reductions, motorists should plan to use an alternate route during the peak commute hours from approximately 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

All work takes place during weekdays. Some bus routes will need to be temporarily relocated to allow the work to occur.

Driver Benefits

In addition to repaving all lanes, this project will preserve and extend the life of the existing pavement and improve ride quality. The repaved 19th Avenue will improve driver safety and enhance the driving experience. Pedestrians and cyclists will also benefit from safer, smoother streets to traverse across.
