What’s New?

Map of 19th Avenue Paving and Rehabilitation Project

Caltrans is repaving State Route 1, also known as 19th Avenue in Spring of 2026. This important rehabilitation project will repave all northbound and southbound lanes of 19th Avenue (State Route 1) between Lincoln Way and Holloway Avenue, approximately 18.8 lane miles, and Park Presidio Boulevard and the California Street intersection.

When is this Happening?

This entire project will be accomplished in two phases over about a year and a half. The target is for the project to be completed by December 2026.

Phase 1: Parking strip repaving was completed on Jan. 30, 2026.

Phase 2: Full lane repaving begins in April 2026.

Why is this Necessary?

This work is necessary to fix/remove potholes, repair unsound pavement and repave lanes. This work will improve ride quality, and maintain safe and connected travel route. Furthermore, residents and motorists have voiced their concerns about this road and have requested it be rehabilitated for some time. Caltrans heard the public’s call, and we’re responding.

What about traffic impacts?

Three weekend closures are needed to finish the second phase of this project. Organizing the work in three weekend closures will reduce impact on the public from 40 to 10 days.

For all three closures, two lanes are scheduled to be fully closed with one lane open for public transit, emergency responders and local access.

The schedule is as follows:

  • 70-hour closure: Friday, April 24 from 7 a.m. until Monday, April 26 at 5 a.m. on Northbound 19th Avenue from Sloat Boulevard to Lincoln Avenue
  • 70-hour closure: Friday, May 8 from 7 a.m. until Monday, May 10 at 5 a.m. on Southbound 19th Avenue from Lincoln Avenue to Sloat Boulevard
  • 75-hour closure: Friday, May 22 from 7 p.m. until Monday, May 25 at 10 p.m. on Southbound/Northbound 19th Avenue from Sloat Boulevard to Halloway Avenue

The second phase of the project includes resurfacing the existing asphalt pavement on SR-1 from Holloway Avenue to Lincoln Way. California Street/Park Presidio intersection will be repaved later during the summer. The schedule also includes upgrading the traffic detection system. Parking on 19th Avenue will be restricted to work zones during weekend closures; parking is permitted on side streets.

Even though one lane will always remain open to traffic while repaving is underway, motorists are encouraged to use alternative routes.

Driver Benefits

The repaved 19th Avenue will improve driver safety and enhance the driving experience. Pedestrians and cyclists will also benefit from safer, smoother streets to traverse across.
