Getting to Eureka

New STAA Designation on Route 299: STAA vehicles can now travel on Route 299 between US-101 and Iron Mountain Road near Redding, CA where it was previously accessible only to "California Legal" vehicles. For more information, see the Caltrans District 1 Map (PDF) and District 2 Map (PDF) .

California Legal Vehicles Required on US-101 when Approaching Eureka from South of Leggett, CA: Both single-trailer and double-trailer vehicles must still be "California Legal" to access the Eureka area from NORTHBOUND 101.

"California Legal" vehicles with single trailers are defined as:

  • maximum 65 feet overall combination length, and
  • maximum 40 feet kingpin-to-rear-axle (KPRA) length

For a graphic illustration of the length dimensions of California Legal (black truck) and STAA (green truck) vehicles with both single trailers and doubles, view the Truck Map Legend (PDF) .

Solutions

65-Foot Overall Length Limit: If your STAA vehicle has a 40-foot KPRA or less, you must modify your overall length to 65 feet or less. This can be accomplished by switching to a shorter tractor.

40-Foot KPRA Limit: If your STAA vehicle has a 48-foot trailer and a KPRA length over 40 feet, you will need to modify the combination to "California Legal" by reducing the overall length to 65 feet, AND by sliding the axle so that the KPRA length is no more than 40 feet.
