Grant Management Branch: Sustainable Transportation Planning Grants
The Grant Management Branch administers the Caltrans Sustainable Transportation Planning Grants within the Headquarters Division of Transportation Planning. The Sustainable Transportation Planning Grants are comprised of the following four grant categories — Sustainable Communities (Competitive & Formula), Strategic Partnerships and Strategic Partnerships - Transit – which award a total of approximately $34.8 million (state and federal funding) annually to local and regional planning agencies, cities, counties, transit agencies, and Native American Tribal Governments.
Caltrans announces the FY 2025-26 Sustainable Transportation Planning Grant Awards
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is pleased to release the Fiscal Year (FY) 2025-26 Sustainable Transportation Planning Grant Awards. A total of 140 applications were received with requests totaling approximately $58.3 million. Of these applications, 65 are being awarded, totaling $26.5 million. In addition, Metropolitan Planning Organizations will receive $12.5 million in Sustainable Communities Formula grants to further their Regional Transportation Plan/Sustainable Communities Strategy.

Grant applicants are encouraged to contact Caltrans district staff to request feedback for unsuccessful applications and receive technical assistance with application development for the next call for applications. The FY 2026-27 Sustainable Transportation Planning Grant funding availability and schedule information is outlined below. Applicants are encouraged to visit the California Grants Portal and subscribe to receive notifications about State funding opportunities.
The Sustainable Transportation Planning Grants include:
Sustainable Communities Grants (Approximately $30.3 million) to encourage local and regional planning that supports state goals, implements Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) Sustainable Communities Strategies (SCS) (where applicable), and to ultimately achieve the State’s greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction target of 40 and 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2030 and 2050, respectively.
Strategic Partnerships Grants ($4.5 million) to identify and address statewide, interregional, or regional transportation deficiencies on the State highway system in partnership with Caltrans. A sub-category funds transit-focused planning projects that address multimodal transportation deficiencies.
- September 2025 - Release FY 2026-27 Grant Application Guide/Call-for-Applications for a minimum of eight weeks and conduct District and HQ grant application workshops
- November/December 2025 - Anticipated grant application deadline
- Spring 2026 - Application evaluation and management approval of grant recommendations

- Fall 2026 - Grant recipients begin project activities
- Winter-Summer 2029 - Grant projects are completed and grant funds expire
FY 2024-25 Grant Awards
On July 9, 2024, Caltrans announced the Sustainable Transportation Planning Grant Program awards for Fiscal Year (FY) 2024-25. A statewide total of 146 applications were received with requests totaling approximately $73.9 million for Sustainable Communities Competitive, Strategic Partnerships, and Climate Adaptation Planning Grants. Of these applications, 89 were selected for grant awards, totaling approximately $51.4 million. The grant award and non-award lists for each grant are provided below. In addition, Metropolitan Planning Organizations received $12.5 million in Sustainable Communities Formula grants to further their Regional Transportation Plan/Sustainable Communities Strategy.
FY 2023-24 Grant Awards
On August 31, 2023, Caltrans announced the Sustainable Transportation Planning Grant Program awards for Fiscal Year (FY) 2023-24. A statewide total of 161 grant applications were received with requests totaling approximately $66.8 million for Sustainable Communities Competitive and Strategic Partnerships Grants. Of these applications, 90 were selected for grant awards, totaling approximately $41.6 million. The grant award and non-award lists for each grant are provided below. In addition, Metropolitan Planning Organizations will receive $12.5 million in Sustainable Communities Formula grants to further their Regional Transportation Plan/Sustainable Communities Strategy.
FY 2022-23 Grant Awards
On April 4, 2022, Caltrans announced the Sustainable Transportation Planning Grant Program awards for Fiscal Year (FY) 2022-23. A statewide total of 131 grant applications were received with requests totaling approximately $42.5 million for Sustainable Communities Competitive and Strategic Partnerships Grants. Of these applications, 67 were selected for grant awards, totaling approximately $22.2 million. The grant award and non-award lists for each grant are provided below. In addition, Metropolitan Planning Organizations will receive $12.5 million in Sustainable Communities Formula grants to further their Regional Transportation Plan/Sustainable Communities Strategy.
