Road Safety Data Resources

The Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) utilizes a data-driven process to identify key safety needs and guides resource and investment decisions that provide the greatest potential to achieve the plan’s goal of zero traffic fatalities and serious injuries on all of California’s public roadways. The resources below provide crash data to support data-driven efforts to create safe and accessible roads for all road users in California.

State Resources
SHSP Crash Data Dashboard developed to provide SHSP implementers with direct access to crash data. The dashboard can easily be accessed after registering and allows for the filtering of fatal and serious injury crashes over the last 10 years based on crash characteristics. Some filtering options include SHSP Challenge Area, crash severity, location, cause, and demographic information.

Office of Environmental Health Hazards (OEHHA) CalEnviroScreen 4.0 Data Dashboard shows cumulative environmental impacts in California communities by census tract. Traffic Impacts is one of the quantified pollution burdens. Additional visualizations are available through the Indicator Maps.

California Crash Reporting System (CCRS) provides statistic crash records for the State of California. This data was previously available through iSWITRS, which officially discontinued public access on 1/8/2025.

California State GeoPortal a centralized geographic open data portal, which includes authoritative data on topics including water, health, energy, environment, transportation, land use, boundaries, geology, wildlife, education, economy and fire.

  • Major Truck Traffic Generators: Represent transfer facilities that generate major truck traffic in California.
  • California Schools: California K-12 public school locations with school-level demographics, including enrollment, FRPM (Free or Reduced-Price Meal) eligibility, and homeless status.
Caltrans Traffic Census Program traffic counts for the State Highway System, including Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT), Annual Average Daily Truck Traffic, Ramp Volumes, and Peak Hour Volume Data.
Caltrans Transportation Equity Index (EQI) identifies communities that are most burdened by the transportation system through high exposure to traffic and crashes, have the greatest gaps in multimodal access to destinations, and receive the fewest benefits from the transportation system.
California Department of Public Health Emergency Medical Services Authority (CDPH/EMSA) Situational Awareness Application utilizes GIS to provide a common operating map of current hazards in addition to health care facilities.
CDPH EpiCenter an interactive tool for viewing California data on injuries that resulted in death, hospitalization, or an emergency department (ED) visit.
California Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Information System (CEMSIS) Dashboards are a demonstration to show how EMS data can be used. The dashboards only reflect the Local EMS Agencies that currently participate and submit some form of EMS data into CEMSIS.
California Highway Patrol (CHP) Traffic Incident Information Page highlights recent traffic incidents.
Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Data Dashboard provides data visualizations related to DUIs, vehicle registration, licensure, and fatality demographic information.
OTS Crash Rankings allows jurisdictions to compare their traffic safety statistics to other jurisdictions with similar-sized populations.
SB 535 Disadvantaged Communities (DAC) provides a visualization of California DACs, which are specifically targeted for investment of proceeds from the state’s Cap-and-Trade Program.
University of California Safe Transportation Research and Education Center (SafeTREC), Berkeley provides data analysis and tools to better understand safety and mobility in transportation and land use planning in California.
  • California Active Transportation Safety Information Pages (CATSIP) Crash Data provides pedestrian and bicycle count and crash data, as well as information on other crash data tools and resources.
  • California Traffic Safety Dashboard allows users to visualize crash data and traffic safety activities in conjunction with demographics in California.
    • Traffic Safety Overview Tool identify at risk communities based on traffic safety and demographic data.
    • The Safety Heat Map create interactive heat maps to visualize and analyze crash data and traffic safety improvement activities in California.
    • Street Story community engagement platform in English and Spanish that allows residents, community groups, and agencies to input and collect information about transportation crashes, near misses, general hazards, and safe locations to travel. This is especially useful for tribal areas, where crashes are historically underreported.
  • Transportation Injury Mapping System (TIMS) provides quick, easy and free access to California crash data from the Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS) that has been geo-coded to easily map crashes. Note: property-damage only crashes are not included.
    • SWITRS Summary navigate trends of fatal and injury crashes, fatalities and injuries to pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcyclists, older adults and unrestrained vehicle passengers, fatalities and injuries related to alcohol, drugs, distracted driving, and speeding in California.
    • DUI Crash Summary and Map explore alcohol- and drug-related crash and injury trends, both statewide and in a county or city area.
    • SWITRS GIS Map offers an interactive map-centric approach to viewing and querying SWITRS crash data with various tools including crash diagram and rank by intersection.
