Erosion Control Toolbox: Rolled Erosion Control Product (Netting)

Introduction

R E C P Netting

Rolled Erosion Control Product (Netting) is a net produced from 100% coconut (coir) fiber and is available in three different weights.

When to Use This Treatment

  • Use on excavation (cut) and embankment (fill) slopes between 2:1 and 1:1 (H:V)
  • Use of Rolled Erosion Control Product (Netting) in a stream or channel below the 100-year base flood elevation will be determined by the responsible charge Engineer. Planting or incorporation of seed proposed by the Landscape Architect in conjunction with the RECP Netting will be evaluated by the responsible charge Engineer.

Benefits

  • Provides immediate protection from surface erosion
  • Helps retain soil moisture to improve seed germination and vegetation establishment
  • Longevity of 3 years (not considering vegetation)

Limitations

  • Rocks and debris may lift blankets above the soil surface, allowing erosion to occur between the blanket and the soil surface
  • Surface treatment only - unlikely to improve compacted, nutrient depleted, or poorly draining soils as necessary to ensure vigorous long term vegetative cover

Selecting a Rolled Erosion Control Product (Netting)

Designers should specify the erosion control netting type required by the project site conditions. The table below provides an overview of the three netting types:

RECP Netting (Type A) 36 Months 3:1 400 11.8 65%
RECP Netting (Type B) 36 Months 1:1 700 20.6 50%
RECP Netting (Type C) 36 Months 1:1 900 26.6 39%

Rolled Erosion Control Product (Netting)(Type A)

 R E C P Netting type A

Rolled Erosion Control Product (Netting) (Type A) has a high open area percentage so seed may be applied before or after the netting is placed.

Key attributes of this product include:

  • Seeding: Hydroseed before or after netting installation
  • Open Area: 65%
  • Weight: 3 lbs/sf (11.8 oz/sq yd)
  • Slopes: Up to 3:1

Rolled Erosion Control Product (Netting)(Type B)

 R E C P Netting type B

The photo above shows Rolled Erosion Control Product (Netting)(Type B) installed as part of a restoration project. This product has a moderate open area. Seed may be applied after the netting is placed, however, seed germination improves if it is applied to the soil prior to placing the netting.

  • Seeding: Hydroseed before or after netting installation
  • Open Area: 50%
  • Weight: 4.46 lbs/sf (20.6 oz/sq yd)
  • Slopes: Up to 1:1

Rolled Erosion Control Product (Netting)(Type C)

 R E C P Netting type C

The photo above shows Rolled Erosion Control Product (Netting) (Type C) installed as part of a restoration project. This is a heavy-weight product with a very small open area percentage. Seed applied on top of this product may not germinate due to reduced contact with the soil. Seed applied prior to installing this product may not emerge through the small openings.

  • Seeding: Hydroseed prior to netting installation because material is too dense for effective seeding after netting installation
  • Open Area: 39%
  • Material: Heavy weave 100% spun coir geotextile fabric
  • Weight: 4.6 lbs/sf (26.6 oz/sq yd)
  • Slopes: Up to 1:1

Consider Using With

Regardless of the product specified, this material also requires permanent vegetative protection provided by:

To effectively treat sites with compacted, nutrient depleted, or poorly draining soils, consider combining this treatment with:
