State Route 1 Multi-Asset Roadway Rehabilitation Project
Caltrans D4 is implementing a pavement rehabilitation project along Highway 1 between Moss Beach and Half Moon Bay. This critical project will not only upgrade systems (assets) that are nearing the end of their service lives but will incorporate many new safety elements in accordance with Caltrans commitment to the “Complete Streets” initiative. Complete Streets is an approach to planning, designing, and building streets that enables safe access for all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists of all abilities and ages. Caltrans will be installing curb ramps, crosswalks, a Class I/II bike path, and sidewalks with high visibility markings.
The project covers 7.3 miles and will include:
- 7.3 miles of repaving in both northbound and southbound directions
- 14.6 miles of new Class II buffered bike lanes
- Complete Streets improvements
- Upgrade 20 existing guardrails
- Rehabilitate 3 drainage system culverts
- Stripe 47 crosswalks and make improvements at four bus stops
- Upgrade 17 intersection curb ramps to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards
- Upgrade 8 traffic operation system elements for traffic efficiency
- Improving public access at Surfer’s Beach and adding wayfinding signage to public parking areas
Caltrans is coordinating with the Half Moon Bay Planning Commission, the City of Half Moon Bay, the Granada Community Services District, the San Mateo County Harbor District, CalFire, the Midcoast Community Council, the CHP, and the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office to ensure beautiful and accessible improvements with the least amount of disruption possible.
