Project includes new bike lanes and upgrades to crosswalks, curb ramps, and guardrails

SAN MATEO COUNTY ― Caltrans is scheduled to start construction on a pavement rehabilitation project between the community of Moss Beach and the city of Half Moon Bay in San Mateo County.

Starting in November, crews will begin constructing pedestrian curb ramps at the following locations: Kelly Avenue, State Route (SR) 92, Main Street, Casa Del Mar Drive, Beach Avenue, Wave Avenue, Ruisseau Francais Avenue, Medio Avenue, Coronado Street, and Capistrano Road. Curbs will meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards, ensuring safe access while work is underway. Temporary concrete barriers will also be installed to separate pedestrians from traffic and protect them during construction.

Known as the SR-1 Multi-Asset Roadway Rehabilitation Project, the $46.7M project encompasses upgrading assets (such as pavement, guardrails, curbs, and crosswalks) that are nearing the end their service lives. Assets will be brought up to ADA standards, and Class II bike lanes will be added to both the north- and south-bound sides of the roadway.

Initial Planned Work Schedule:

  • Week of Monday, October 20: crews will stage materials near Surfers Beach.
  • Starting Monday, November 3: crews will begin constructing curb ramps within the project limits.
  • Late November: depending on weather, paving work may start as soon as the second half of November in Half Moon Bay.

Intermittent lane closures may be required, but traffic will have access to SR-1 through the construction zone at all times.

The project will continue through the summer of 2027. To learn more, visit the project website.
