Student Assistant Program
The Caltrans Student Assistant Program is designed to introduce students with the work and employment opportunities within the Department. Gain on-the-job training and paid experience while attending college! We have many opportunities in the following fields:
- Accounting
- Business Administration
- Computer Sciences
- Engineering
- Environmental Studies
- Geographic Information Systems
- Geography
- Landscape Architecture
- Transportation Planning
- And more!
Caltrans currently partners with California Intern Network. Positions exist throughout the State of California.
Students must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 semester (or equivalent 9 quarter) units in a related field of study and maintain a 2.0 GPA. For additional information, please e-mail us at HQStudentAssistantProgram@dot.ca.gov.
Volunteer Program
The purpose of the Caltrans Volunteer Program is to provide unpaid volunteer opportunities to participants and prepare them for potential employment opportunities at Caltrans. The program is designed to assist individuals with their pursuit of professional development by providing hands-on training with the fundamental concepts, knowledge, and techniques of various occupational work groups. Volunteers must be over the age of 15 (with a valid work permit, if applicable).

Information from applications is added to an active database to be used by supervisors and district personnel to review candidates’ skills and abilities, education, and geographic preference during the selection process.
