Respecting our similarities and differences

Employee Assistance Program graphic about respect and diversity

We are all influenced by our backgrounds, upbringings, and cultural traditions. Whether we agree or disagree with others about issues such as politics, religion, or money, it is still possible to listen to other people's viewpoints with respect.

One way to practice this is to listen to another person's opinion without interrupting or trying to convince the other person that your view is the "right" one.

Respecting our similarities and differences is important in maintaining positive relationships at home, work, and in the community. Tips to understand and appreciate different perspectives include the following:

  • Don't take it personally if others disagree with you.
  • Reject stereotyping. Even "flattering" stereotypes are never true of all people within that population.
  • Become educated about different cultures and traditions, including your own.

Accepting the similarities and differences in others can also help you gain greater acceptance of yourself.

We are all human and we all have flaws and blind spots. We are also capable of tolerance, kindness and civility.

When we treat others with respect, we set a positive example and make the world a better place in which to live.
