Super 605 Freeway Enhancements Project
Location
Interstate 605 (I-605) from Katella Avenue in Long Beach to the terminus of I-605 north of I-210 in the San Gabriel Valley.
The Segments
Segment 1: Katella Avenue in Los Alamitos/Long Beach to Telegraph Road in Santa Fe Springs, fall 2023:
This project was allocated a total of $72.8 million ($66.7 million from IIJA, $4.6 million from SB1, $1.5 million from SHOPP). Construction is estimated to be $59 million.
Improvements include replacing distressed pavement and concrete slabs. Construction will include rehabilitating 96 lane miles of pavement, upgrading curb ramps, replacing signage and striping, and applying treatment to ramps and connectors to enhance skid resistance on the road surface, and an in-roadway warning light system where the offramps from southbound I-605 meet the Spring St. bridge bicycle lanes. Anticipated completion in early 2028. Contractor: C.A. Rasmussen Inc. & Vanguard Construction Inc.
Segment 2: I-10 to the I-605 terminus north of I-210, fall 2023:
This project has been allocated $24.5 million ($22.4 from IIJA; $1.8 from SB 1; $351,000 from SHOPP). Construction is estimated to be $19.4 million.
Improvements include rehabilitating pavement and concrete slabs, pedestrian upgrades at on- and off-ramps, including curb ramps and pedestrian accessible signals, and upgrades to six traffic signals. Construction will also include eight new vehicle maintenance pullouts, more than 12,000 linear feet of guardrail and the replacement of 27 overhead sign structures. Anticipated completion in fall 2026. Contractor: Peterson Chase General Engineering Construction, Inc.
Segment 3: Telegraph Road in Santa Fe Springs to I-10, spring 2024:
This project was allocated $201.1 million from the CTC in August ($184.2 million from IIJA, $16.9 million from SB 1). Construction is estimated to be $181.6 million.
Improvements include rehabilitating pavement and concrete slabs. Construction will include 93 lane miles of new pavement, upgrading more than 16,000 linear feet of guardrail and replacing 16 overhead sign structures. In addition, the project includes 53 acres of landscaping and stormwater improvements to help prevent trash and other pollutants from draining into the San Gabriel River. Anticipated completion in early 2030. Contract not awarded, yet.
Background
The Super 605 corridor project will rehabilitate pavement on I-605 from Long Beach to the San Gabriel Valley. Construction, totaling $298.4 million, is funded with $273.3 million from the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), and more than $23.3 million from Senate Bill (SB) 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017, and $1.9 million from SHOPP.
“Caltrans is aggressively upgrading and rebuilding our infrastructure in California, including pavement rehabilitation on major interstate routes that transport goods and connect local communities,” said Caltrans Director Tony Tavares. “The department and our federal partners are making a significant investment to rebuild and maintain our state transportation system.”
Benefits
These upgrades will improve the overall ride quality, safety, and operational performance of the I-605 corridor for drivers and create a safer work environment for Caltrans workers by reducing the frequency and duration of pavement repairs. The new pavement will extend the service life of the roadway up to 40 years.
Total Programmed Project Costs
$298.4 million.
