LOS ANGELES – U.S. 101 at First Street, in the Boyle Heights neighborhood near downtown Los Angeles will fully close during overnight hours Thursday (southbound) and Friday (northbound) for crews to complete bridge upgrade work.
Motorists should expect the following overnight closures and plan for the below detours:
- Between 11:59 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, and 6 a.m. Friday, Jan. 23, on southbound U.S. 101 at First Street
- Southbound U.S. 101 at the eastbound Interstate 10 connector to First Street will be completely closed.
- Detour: Take eastbound I-10 to southbound Interstate 710, then eastbound State Route 60 to southbound Interstate 5.
- Mission Street and Commercial Street on-ramps will also be closed.
- Between 11:01 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, and 4 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, on northbound U.S. 101 at First Street
- Northbound U.S. 101 from just south of the First Street off-ramp to just north of the First Street on-ramp will be completely closed.
- Detour: Exit at First Street off-ramp, turn left onto First Street and then right onto Mission Road to take the on-ramp to northbound U.S. 101 and eastbound Interstate 10.
Additionally, the posted speed limit will be reduced by 10 mph in the construction zones. Signs alerting motorists of the closures and reduced speed limits will be posted.
Closures and lane reductions are subject to change due to weather or operational reasons.

This work is part of a $15.8 million project to upgrade existing bridge rails to current standards and increase the durability and longevity of the Alvarado Street, First Street and Santa Monica Boulevard/State Route 2 bridges on U.S. 101 and another on State Route 110/Arroyo Seco Parkway at Avenue 60. Work on the bridge at Avenue 60 will begin in early 2026.
