U.S. 101 Near First Street to Fully Close Overnights May 13-16 for Bridge Work Near Downtown Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES – U.S. 101 near First Street, in the Boyle Heights neighborhood near downtown Los Angeles, will have nightly full closures in one direction during the week of May 11 for work on the First Street bridge.

Crews will only close one direction, depending on the location of work. At least one direction will be open at all times.

Motorists will experience the following daily overnight closures starting at 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, through 4 a.m. Saturday, May 16: 

  • Northbound 101 at First Street full closure
  • Detour: Take First Street exit, go left on First Street and then right on Mission Road to the eastbound Interstate 10/northbound U.S. 101 onramp. 
  • Southbound 101 from Interstate 10 connector to Fourth Street full closurre
  • Detour options: 
  • Take eastbound I-10 to southbound Interstate 710, then eastbound State Route 60 or southbound Interstate 5. 
  • Take southbound State Route 110 to eastbound I-10 to eastbound SR-60 or southbound I-5. 
  • If southbound 101 is open, up to two lanes may be closed between midnight and 6 a.m. 

The posted speed limit will be reduced by 10 mph in each of the construction zones. Signs alerting motorists of the closures and reduced speed limits will be posted. 

The closures are necessary for crews to remove existing metal guardrail and demolish bridge overhangs to make upgrades.

Closures and lane reductions are subject to change due to weather or operational reasons.

This work is part of a $15.8 million project to upgrade existing bridge rails to current standards and increase the durability and longevity of four bridges: On U.S. 101 at Alvarado Street, First Street and Santa Monica Boulevard/State Route 2, and the Avenue 60 off-ramp bridge of State Route 110/Arroyo Seco Parkway.
