The nightly closures will be 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday through Friday for crews to make progress on pipe installation work
TOPANGA – Starting Tuesday, Jan. 13, Caltrans will close Topanga Canyon Boulevard/State Route 27 (SR-27) nightly between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. from Pacific Coast Highway to Grand View Drive while crews prepare the highway to install an 84-inch reinforced concrete pipe beneath the highway.
The 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. extended overnight daily closures on SR-27 from PCH to Grand View Drive will be in effect Tuesday through at least 5 a.m. Friday, Jan. 16. North of the closure, SR-27 from Grand View Drive to U.S. 101 will remain open, including access to the unincorporated community of Topanga and area businesses.
Crews extended the nightly closure due to unexpected field conditions after encountering large boulders during excavation. The difficulty of breaking through the rock requires more time and equipment, and the extended hours allow crews to prepare, work and clean up the work zone so it is safe for the public and workers each morning. It also keeps crews on track in preparation for the extended weekend closure of this stretch of highway from 12:01 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, to 7 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19.
The extended nightly closure hours could continue into the week of Jan. 19 if there are more unexpected conditions. Caltrans will provide updates after the extended weekend closure.
The 84-inch reinforced concrete pipe is part of emergency repair work on SR-27 that will restore and protect the highway from future storm damage. SR-27 from PCH to Grand View Drive remains an active work zone due to these emergency repairs. It is typically closed to the public from midnight to 5 a.m. daily.
