State Route 27 from Pacific Coast Highway to Grand View Drive remains closed
LOS ANGELES – Monday’s rainstorms brought mudslides and debris flows to numerous locations on Topanga Canyon Boulevard/State Route 27 (SR-27) and State Route 1/Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) in the Palisades Fire recovery work zones.
The 3.6-mile stretch of SR-27 between PCH and Grand View Drive remains closed to the public as rainstorms continue to move through the area. Crews as of Monday afternoon identified at least eight locations where debris flows blocked the roadway.
Given current impacts, saturated slopes and forecasted rain, crews anticipate keeping the highway closed at least through Tuesday. Motorists should plan alternative routes for the morning and evening commutes. Crews on Tuesday will continue cleanup on SR-27 and reassess when it is safe to reopen.
A flood watch was in effect from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday. The National Weather Service predicts a second storm system to move through the area Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning, with a chance of minor to moderate coastal flooding.
This stretch of SR-27 is an active work zone for ongoing recovery efforts from the Palisades Fire and winter storms. It is typically closed to the public from midnight to 5 a.m. daily.
Storm impacts on Pacific Coast Highway
Monday’s storms also brought damage to PCH, including a section of wall on northbound PCH just north of Porto Marina Way. The damage brought debris onto the highway, which was reduced to one lane at that location.
Northbound PCH was also reduced to one lane just south of SR-27, where mud and debris flow came down the slope onto the highway.
Motorists are encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel during rainstorms. If traveling, check local weather alerts before heading out and use headlights and wipers when driving through rainstorms. Expect delays and never drive through moving water – standing water may be deeper than it appears.
