Crews will begin work on upgrades at three bridges near Alvarado Street, Santa Monica Boulevard and First Street
LOS ANGELES – Caltrans announces overnight lane closures the week of Dec. 8 near three bridges on U.S. 101 for bridge rail work.
Overnight lane closures will occur from as early as 9 p.m. to as late as 6 a.m. each day from Monday, Dec. 8, to Saturday, Dec. 12.
Those traveling along the following routes will experience intermittent overnight lane and ramp closures:
U.S. 101 at Alvarado Street
Northbound off-ramp closed at northbound Alvarado Street
Southbound off-ramp closed at southbound Alvarado Street
U.S. 101 at Santa Monica Boulevard
Northbound off-ramp closed at Santa Monica Boulevard
Southbound on- and off-ramps closed at Santa Monica Boulevard
Up to two lanes of northbound U.S. 101 closed between Melrose Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard
Up to two lanes of southbound 101 closed between Western Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard
U.S. 101 at First Street
Northbound off-ramp closed at First Street
Southbound off-ramp closed at First Street
Up to two lanes of northbound and southbound U.S. 101 will be closed between First Street and Fourth Street
Additionally, the posted speed limit will be reduced by 10 mph in each of the four construction zones. Signs alerting motorists of the closures and reduced speed limits will be posted. Closures and lane reductions are subject to change due to weather or operational reasons. Specific schedules will be shared in advance.

This work is part of a $15.8 million project to upgrade existing bridge rails to current standards and increase the durability and longevity of the three bridges on U.S. 101 and another on State Route 110/Arroyo Seco Parkway at Avenue 60. Work on the bridge at Avenue 60 will begin in early 2026.
Crews will also update signage, streetlights and traffic signals at bridge locations. The Santa Monica and Alvarado Street bridges will include updated sidewalks and ADA facilities.
