For Immediate Release
Los Angeles County — Caltrans announces it has reached a milestone on the Super 605 freeway corridor enhancement project. The department has completed its extended weekend closures for paving work on a segment of Interstate 605 (I-605).
Between September of 2024 and April of 2025 Caltrans completed 10 extended weekend closures, lasting 55 hours each, to expedite paving work on freeway lanes on I-605 between Firestone Boulevard in Norwalk and Slauson Avenue in Santa Fe Springs. The 55-hour extended weekend closures included overnight full freeway closures on Friday and Sunday nights and lane reductions on Saturdays and Sundays.
Extended weekend closures allow the contractors to complete a substantial amount of work in a short period of time, reducing the overall duration of the project and the associated negative impact to the driving public. In one extended weekend closure contractors demolish and remove concrete from the old freeway lanes; grade and compact earth; place a gravel sub-base; place and level asphalt concrete base; place rebar; and pour and level the final concrete layer.
In fall of 2023 Caltrans (District 7) contractors started work on a major corridor project to rehabilitate Interstate 605 (I-605) from Long Beach to the San Gabriel Valley. With a total cost of $298 million – including $273 million from the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) $23 million from Senate Bill (SB) 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017 – this project will extend the I-605 pavement life by up to four decades, reduce costly repairs, provide a smoother ride for motorists and trucks, and create a safer environment for Caltrans workers by reducing the frequency and duration of time in the work zone for pavement maintenance.
A second segment of the Super 605 freeway enhancement corridor project will include a projected total of 78 extended weekend closures between Telegraph Road in Santa Fe Springs and I-10, beginning this summer. Work on the final of three segments in this corridor project will be completed in early 2030. For more details on the overall Super 605 corridor project, go to

Caltrans reminds drivers to drive with caution through construction zones and “Be Work Zone Alert”.
