MALIBU — Caltrans announces the start of construction for a pavement project on Pacific Coast Highway (State Route 1) from Malibu Lagoon to the Ventura County Line. Construction will begin on Oct. 27, 2026, and motorists can expect work to be performed Monday through Friday between 6 a.m. – 3 p.m. At least one lane will always be open in each direction while work is being conducted.
The project includes pavement rehabilitation, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) curb ramps, guardrail, signage and road technology upgrades, roadway lighting and signal improvements, along with applying new striping. It is also incorporating some elements of Caltrans' Complete Streets to increase safety and mobility features for cyclists, pedestrians and motorists to share the road.
Residents and local businesses located nearby may experience noise, vibrations and grinding associated with construction activities. The schedule is weather permitting, and all dates and times are subject to change. Motorists should expect delays and are strongly advised to use alternate routes. Real time traffic information can be found on Quickmap.
Construction is scheduled from Fall 2026 through Winter 2029/2030. The project cost is estimated at $69 million. Chumo Construction Inc. of Baldwin Park, California is the contractor.
