SAN PEDRO – Caltrans has partially reopened northbound Interstate 110 (I-110) at Channel Street in San Pedro after completing a structural stability assessment. Caltrans worked with Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), California Highway Patrol, CAL FIRE and City of L.A. departments to prepare the site for investigation and structural stability assessment.

Shortly after 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, Caltrans determined it was safe to open three lanes of northbound I-110. All lanes of southbound I-110 are open. Emergency personnel will remain on site, requiring one northbound lane to remain closed. Please exercise caution as crews continue working on the roadway.

The highway was reopened after the following work:

  • The tunnel has been cleared of the large volume of water and foam used to extinguish the blaze, which ended May 5.
  • A comprehensive search of the tunnel was with the assistance of drones, robots, hazardous materials teams and Urban Search and rescue teams.
  • Caltrans engineers entered the tunnel to remove debris and assess its structural integrity and performed a structural investigation of the highway.

Drivers should exercise caution in the area, as workers are present on the roadway. Check current traffic conditions on the Caltrans Quickmap.
