Project Description

This project proposes the replacement of the historic concrete baluster bridge rail, a 1" thick polyester concrete bridge deck overlay, and replacement of the bridge approach railing to meet Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH) standards. The project intends to preserve integrity of the character-defining features and historical significance of Rocky Creek Bridge through context sensitive railing solutions. The project will also include a battery-operated traffic count station located at postmile 59.5 near the south end of Rocky Creek bridge. The environmental document for this project (supplemental EIR) will analyze the rail design and associated impacts for both Rocky Creek Bridge rail, and Garrapata Creek Bridge rail.

Project Benefits

Purpose and Need

The purpose of this project is to upgrade existing nonstandard bridge railing to current standards, in order to ensure the reliability of Highway 1. The project is needed because the reinforced concrete barrier rail has deteriorated with exposed rusted reinforcement bars, severe cracking, and unsound concrete. The current bridge railing would not be able to withstand vehicle impacts under the current operating speed. As such, Rocky Creek Bridge rail will require upgrading.
