U.S. 101 North Buellton Pavement Project
Project Description
The US 101 North Buellton Pavement Project is located on US 101 (PM R56.1/65.0) in the County of Santa Barbara. The project proposes to preserve 5.78 lane-miles of rigid pavement and 28.712 lane-miles of Flexible Class 2 pavement using a Capital Preventative Maintenance (CAPM) strategy, upgrade guardrail, rehabilitate four culverts, raise one drainage inlet to grade, install four census stations, replace one count station, and install Americans with Disability Act (ADA) compliant ramps.

Project Benefits
Purpose:
The purpose of this project is to preserve and extend the life of the existing pavement, to restore drainage in poor condition to maintain the functionality of the culverts, install ADA compliant ramps, and improve and maintain an efficient transportation information system.
Need:
The pavement condition within the project limits is exhibiting deterioration. If left untreated, deterioration will continue and result in increasingly higher maintenance costs in the future. Corrosion and scouring have led to damaged inverts, shape loss, joint separation, and undermined backfill of the culverts identified within the project limits. If culvert deterioration is not corrected, the culverts will not function properly causing the roadway to fail in the future. Four existing curb ramps are not ADA-compliant and need to be upgraded to meet current standards.
Traffic management elements have been proposed to be replaced or added. If they are not upgraded, the information collected from these Transportation Management System (TMS) elements may be unreliable or absent.
To meet Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH) standards, existing metal beam guardrail (MBGR) will be replaced with the Midwest Guardrail System (MGS).
Proposed Schedule
This project will be under construction from Spring 2026 to Winter 2027.
Current Traffic Impacts
- US 101 reduced to one-lane in each direction from the Nojoqui Creek Bridge to just north of Avenue of Flags.
- Northbound & southbound Santa Rosa on/off ramps and northbound on ramp at McMurray Rd. / Avenue of Flags will be closed until August 13, 2026.
