HIGHWAY 1 CONSTRUCTION NORTH OF MORRO BAY SET TO START
FOR REPLACEMENT OF SOUTHBOUND TORO CREEK BRIDGE

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY — Construction is scheduled to begin Tuesday, April 7 on Highway 1 north of Morro Bay on a project to replace the southbound Toro Creek Bridge structure. Travelers on Highway 1 will encounter long-term traffic control with travel reduced to a single lane throughout the project area.

The project’s construction zone will span from one-half mile north of Yerba Buena St. in Morro Bay to one-half mile north of Chaney Ave. in Cayucos. One lane of travel will remain open in each direction at all times and five-foot shoulders will be maintained for bicycle access.

At the start of construction, an initial traffic switch will move travelers in both the north and southbound direction to the #2 (right) lane to allow crews to complete two weeks of work in the center median.

The next phase of the project will move to a longer-term traffic configuration. Travelers on southbound Highway 1 will be directed on to the northbound Toro Creek Bridge structure. Northbound travel, already reduced to a single lane, will share the northbound bridge with southbound travel.

This project will eventually involve the demolition of the southbound bridge structure and construction of a new bridge in its place. The northbound bridge structure was already replaced in recent years.

Parking areas on the southbound shoulder of Highway 1 will be closed during construction as will beach access in the project area. This includes parking and access to “Dog Beach” adjacent to the construction zone.

This project is expected to be completed by June 30, 2027. The contractor for this $6.8 million project is Souza Construction Inc. of San Luis Obispo, CA.
