Effective January 18, 2026, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has issued the California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (CA MUTCD) 2026 to provide uniform standards and specifications for all official traffic control devices in California. CA MUTCD 2026 will replace CA MUTCD 2014 Revision 9 to meet substantial conformance with the 2023 Edition of the National Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (National MUTCD 2023). This action was taken pursuant to the provisions of California Vehicle Code Section 21400 and the recommendations of the California Traffic Control Devices Committee (CTCDC). Caltrans has received a letter from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) for the CA MUTCD 2026 substantial conformance with the National MUTCD 2023 for Streets and Highways.

Effective April 1, 2025, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has made edits referred to as Revision 9 (Rev 9), to the 2014 California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (CA MUTCD), to provide uniform standards and specifications for all official traffic control devices in California. This action was taken pursuant to the provisions of California Vehicle Code Section 21400 and the recommendations of the California Traffic Control Devices Committee (CTCDC). Caltrans has received a letter of substantial conformance from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) for the CA MUTCD 2014, Rev 9. The CA MUTCD Rev 9 includes policy revisions addressing 9 specific CTCDC recommendations to Caltrans since February 1, 2024, and other corrections and format changes.

Note: The 11th Edition of the MUTCD was published on December 19, 2023, and is effective as of January 18, 2024. Per 23 CRF, California will have a 2-year period through January 18, 2026, to have a revised CA MUTCD in substantial conformance with the National MUTCD. California will continue to use the CA MUTCD 2014 Revision 9 during the 2-year period.

Effective January 11, 2024, CA MUTCD 2014 Revision 8 (Rev 8), includes edits to provide uniform standards and specifications for all official traffic control devices in California pursuant to the provisions of California Vehicle Code Section 21400 and the recommendations of the CTCDC.

The CA MUTCD 2014 Rev 8 includes FHWA’s MUTCD 2009 Edition, and revised in May 2012, as amended for use in California. The CA MUTCD 2014, Rev 8, also includes policy revisions addressing 15 specific CTCDC recommendations to Caltrans since March 10th, 2023, and other corrections and format changes.
