The Division of Right of Way and Land Surveys administers the statewide program for right of way acquisition, real property management, surveying and right of way engineering in support of Caltrans' purpose, mission, vision and goals.

Below is a list of classifications, pay scales, and minimum qualifications required to compete in all current surveying specific vacancies for Caltrans. Or III: Education: Equivalent to completion of two semesters of academic course work at the high school level in drafting, algebra, or geometry. (In addition to meeting one of the required qualifications above, applicants must pass the JET examination) |
Transportation Surveyor (Caltrans) |

Graduation from a four-year curriculum in surveying, surveying engineering, or surveying geomatics accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering Technology. (Registration as a "Senior" in such a curriculum will admit an applicant to the competition, but applicants must produce evidence of graduation before being considered eligible for appointment. (Possession of a valid certificate as a Land Surveyor in Training issued or accepted by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors or possession of a valid certificate as an Engineer in Training accepted by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors in lieu of a certificate as a Land Surveyor in Training may be substituted for the required education.) Transportation Surveyor Party Chief (Caltrans) |

(A Certificate of Registration as a Civil Engineer issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors prior to January 1, 1982 satisfies this requirement.) and Either I One year of experience in the California state service performing duties comparable to a Transportation Surveyor (Caltrans), Range D. Or II: Two years of experience in the California state service performing duties equivalent to a Transportation Surveyor (Caltrans), Range C. Or III: Two years of field or office experience performing duties equivalent to a Transportation Surveyor (Caltrans), Range D. Or IV: Three years of field or office experience performing duties equivalent to a Transportation Surveyor (Caltrans), Range A, B, or C. (In addition to meeting one of the required qualifications above, applicants must pass the TSPC examination) |

(A Certificate of Registration as a Civil Engineer issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors prior to January 1, 1982 satisfies this requirement.) and Either I One year of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Chief of Land Surveys Or II: One year of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Transportation Surveyor Party Chief (Caltrans). Or III: One year of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Land Surveyor Supervisor. Or IV: Two years of experience in the California state service performing the duties comparable to those of an associate level surveyor or Transportation Surveyor (Caltrans), Range D. Or V: Broad and extensive (more than five years) transportation surveying experience, two years of which are equivalent in responsibility to that of a Transportation Surveyor (Caltrans), Range D, in the California state service. (A Certificate of Registration as a Civil Engineer issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors prior to January 1, 1982 satisfies this requirement.) and Either I Two years of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Senior Land Surveyor or Senior Transportation Surveyor (Caltrans). OR II: Broad and extensive (more than five years) land surveying experience, three years of which includes supervising a major program element of a large surveying operation equivalent in responsibility to the Senior Land Surveyor or Senior Transportation Surveyor (Caltrans) level in the California state service. (In addition to meeting one of the required qualifications above, applicants must pass the Sup TS examination.
