What are the benefits of joining the CWBTAC?

The CWBTAC plays a critical role in strengthening Caltrans' planning, design, delivery, and maintenance of walking and bicycling programs and facilities for all ages and abilities, across diverse communities statewide. As a CWBTAC member, you will be able to regularly meet and coordinate with multiple Caltrans divisions and programs as well as other active transportation and complete streets professionals to exchange ideas and experiences.

Compensation is not provided for participation on the CWBTAC.

What are the committee requirements?

The CWBTAC meets 4 times each year via virtual meetings. Notification of applicant selections will be sent via email prior to the next quarterly meeting on August 8.

Members will be given advance notice for any in-person meetings, and virtual participation will remain an option. Travel expenses in such cases are not reimbursed.

Members are expected to attend and actively participate in meetings and/or subcommittees and to volunteer to assist and engage in follow-up actions by agreed upon deadlines. Two absences per year without an identified alternate may result in dismissal from the committee.

Who should apply?

We welcome partner agency staff and professional advocates with experience in planning, designing, and delivering active transportation programs and facilities to apply. Experience with planning and designing first-and last-mile transit projects is also desired.

There are 16 open committee seats. We aim to have diverse membership representing: north, south, and central geographies; urban, suburban, and rural community types, including disadvantaged communities; as well as the needs and interests of users of all ages and abilities.

History

In 2018, Caltrans created a new California Walk and Bike Technical Advisory Committee (CWBTAC) made up of external partners to provide regular strategic input and technical guidance on Caltrans’ complete streets and active transportation efforts. The new committee replaces the California Bicycle Advisory Committee, which was established in 1992 and provided input to Caltrans on bicycle facilities for several decades.
