Caltrans Recycling Program

Recently, the California Integrated Waste Management Board (CIWMB) held it's 3rd Annual Recycled Product Trade Show, held in Anaheim, April 4 & 5, 2002. This trade show, which included dozens of exhibitors from all over the country (even one from Canada), along with a variety of workshops by the CIWMB, provided an excellent opportunity for Caltrans to network with vendors and other state agencies who have one common purpose: to demonstrate a product or process that is "green" or environmentally preferable. Here is a small sampling of some of the exhibitors.

With the CIWMB as the main sponsor for this event, they had several exhibit booths present. One of them being the State Agency Buy Recycle Campaign (SABRC). This section of the CIWMB assists staff from other state agencies to establish practices for purchasing products that are made with recycled content, called RCP (recycled content products). State agencies are required to purchase a certain amount of RCPs by statute and report to the CIWMB annually.

Sustainable Building Design plays a big role with the buildings that we work in. The CIWMB, along with other state agencies, have prepared a document called " Building Better Buildings: A Blueprint for Sustainable State Facilities ". In it, Governor Davis' states his sustainable building goals: "...to site, design, deconstruct, renovate, operate, and maintain state buildings that are models of energy, water, and materials efficiency; while providing healthy, productive and comfortable indoor environments and long-term benefits to Californians."

Rubberized Asphalt Concrete (RAC)

Using Rubberized Asphalt Concrete (RAC) is a great way to utilize waste tires into a new product. With over 30 million waste tires generated in California annually, finding ways to put these waste tires to use can benefit California in many ways.
