Closures are for Emergency Work at Landslide in Castaic

Castaic — The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) advises motorists that all lanes on Southbound Interstate 5 (I-5) will be closed overnight at State Route 138 (SR-138) in northern Los Angeles County starting tonight (Monday, May 15) and on each night through Thursday night (May 18), and again on Saturday night (May 20) for pavement work where crews are repairing landslide damage.

Each night, Southbound I-5 will be closed to all traffic between State Route 138 and Templin Highway. Two southbound lanes will reopen for traffic each morning at 5 a.m., except at 8 a.m. on Sunday.

Closure Schedule for Southbound I-5:

Closed at 10 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, to 5 a.m. the next morning.

Closed at 11:59 p.m. Saturday, May 20, to 8 a.m. Sunday, May 21

Detour: Southbound I-5 traffic will detour east on SR-138 and south on SR-14 to Southbound I-5 at Santa Clarita.

The westbound SR-138 connector to Southbound I-5 and the Quail Lake Road, Smokey Bear Road and Vista Del Lago Road on-ramps to Southbound I-5 will also be closed.

Northbound I-5 is not involved in these closures. Southbound I-5 will remain open south of Templin Highway. The schedule is subject to change due to weather or operational reasons.

Southbound I-5 has four lanes which have been reduced to two lanes where the landslide undermined the shoulder of the highway. This emergency project is repairing damage at the landslide, located at postmile 66.57 north of Templin Highway.

Caltrans strongly advises motorists to allow extra travel time and expect delays in both directions on I-5 in northern Los Angeles County. Motorists can check highway closures at QuickMap.dot.ca.gov or by calling 1-800-427-7623. Caltrans will post updates on Twitter at @CaltransDist7. Anyone without a Twitter account can still view the information online.

Caltrans reminds motorists to “Be Work Zone Alert” and “Slow Down and Move Over.”
