Project Will Extend the Service Life of the Bridges and Provide a Smoother Commute for Motorists for Years to Come
STANISLAUS COUNTY - Caltrans will improve and extend the service life of 20 bridges on Interstate 5 in the counties of Merced and Stanislaus, due to funding by Senate Bill 1 (SB 1), the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017.
"This SB 1 project allows crews to perform proactive maintenance work to prevent deterioration of the bridges. The improvements will save taxpayers millions of dollars in costly repairs in the future, and provide motorists with a smooth commute for years to come."
Approximately 42,000 vehicles per day cross the bridges, and more than 10,000 truckers per day use the interstate to reach their destinations. More than 80 percent of the trucks are five-axle, heavy trucks.
"This stretch of I-5 serves as a critical artery for moving people, produce, livestock and manufactured goods between Southern and Northern California. This SB 1 project will benefit California's commercial and agricultural industry by extending the service life of the bridges and sustaining the weight of trucks hauling agricultural goods, such as tomatoes, grapes, poultry, wine and cattle."
This $3.26 million project has been awarded to Myers and Sons Construction of Sacramento. Crews will replace the top layer of the road surface to create a smoother ride. Work is scheduled to begin the week of July 1, and take place during the night, Sunday through Thursday. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, use alternate routes, and Be Work Zone Alert.

SB 1 provides an ongoing funding increase of approximately $1.8 billion annually for the maintenance and rehabilitation of the state highway system. SB 1 funds will enable Caltrans to fix more than 17,000 lane miles of pavement, 500 bridges and 55,000 culverts by 2027.
