HUMBOLDT — Caltrans will repave more than 23 lane miles of U.S. Highway 101 from north of Boyes Creek Viaduct to north of Prairie Creek Park Undercrossing in Humboldt County, due to funds from Senate Bill 1 (SB 1), the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017.
"Not only is US-101 the main artery connecting the counties of Humboldt and Del Norte, it is also known as the Redwood Highway because travelers use the roadway to go to popular campgrounds and see California’s gorgeous Redwoods. This project will allow crews to improve and protect this vital roadway."
More than 10,000 vehicles per day use that stretch of roadway to reach their destination, including large recreational vehicles and commercial trucks.
Without this SB 1 funded project, the pavement would continue to deteriorate, which would have a direct impact on travelers and result in costly maintenance repairs in the future. Providing a smooth roadway is imperative for our community and commerce."
This $3.1 million pavement project has been awarded to Tidewater Construction Inc. Crews will use a rubberized asphalt to make long-lasting repairs that eliminate potholes and restore the highway, improving traffic safety. Work is scheduled to begin May 1, and take place during the day, Monday through Friday. It is anticipated that one lane in each direction will be open for traffic throughout the duration of the project. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, use alternate routes Be Work Zone Alert. SB 1 provides an ongoing funding increase of approximately $1.8 billion annually for the maintenance and rehabilitation of the state highway system. SB 1 funds will enable Caltrans to fix more than 17,000 lane miles of pavement, 500 bridges and 55,000 culverts by 2027.
