Caltrans pays tribute to those it has lost

On April 30 in West Sacramento, Caltrans conducted its 30th annual Workers Memorial. We honored the members of our Caltrans family who have died in the line of duty. Even though we couldn’t hold our traditional ceremony at the State Capitol this year, we still found ways to honor our fallen heroes and their families and let them know that we are continuing to pay tribute to them.

CT News began its March 10 journey northward on U.S. Highway 395 at Kramer Junction, where State Route 58 intersects with the 395.

State Route 190 in Olancha is one of a few roadways that veer off from U.S. 395 toward Death Valley National Park.

This choice is yours when you approach U.S. Highway 395 from Death Valley National Park on State Route 190.

State Route 136, accessible just south of Lone Pine, offers U.S. Highway 395 motorists another way to go to Death Valley.

Manzanar, the site of a Japanese American internment camp during World War II, is off the west side of U.S. 395 a few miles north of Lone Pine.

The highly praised Manzanar National Historic Site Visitor Center is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily.

North of Independence, the Division Creek Rest Area boasts outstanding views of the Eastern Sierra Nevada range, perhaps more so when the sun is shining!

State Route 168, which branches off from U.S. 395 at Big Pine, represents one of the state's most-remote driving experiences.

As you make your way through the Eastern Sierra's "big city" of Bishop, State Route 6 veers off toward another mini-metropolis, Tonopah, Nevada.

A few hundred yards after it forks off from U.S. Highway 395, State Route 6 challenges you to go the distance with this sign.

A few miles north of Bishop is one of the many examples of Adopt-A-Highway signs that pepper the fringes of U.S. Highway 395.

The overpass for South Landing Road near Lake Crowley affords a sweeping southward look of U.S. Highway 395.

To get back onto U.S. 395 from South Landing Road, this sign points one way.

As you approach Mammoth Lakes from the south on U.S. Highway 395, you encounter signage for State Route 203 and, off in distance, a visual of Mammoth Mountain itself.

The name is a bit grim but the scenery is pleasing at this point of U.S. Highway 395 between the Mammoth turnoff and Bridgeport.

Beauty and desolation are two characteristics of U.S. Highway 395 as it hosts motorists going up or down the Eastern Sierra.

March 10 is certainly too early in the year to ascend State Route 120 off U.S. Highway 395 and be able to drive up and over Tioga Pass. Check back in mid-May, at the earliest.

Motorists along U.S. Highway 395 are encouraged to stop at the Mono Basin Scenic Area Visitor Center in Lee Vining and soak in the view.

After it passes through the small community of Lee Vining, U.S. 395 hugs the Mono Lake shoreline as it heads north toward Carson City, Nevada.

At Bridgeport, State Route 182 shoots off from U.S. Highway 395 and heads toward some tiny communities in Nevada.

Snow tires and chains won't cut it; if you want to take State Route 89 up from U.S. 395 toward Markleevilee, you'll need to wait until mid- to late spring.

A few miles shy of the Nevada border, this sign for southbound motorists suggests that if they want to cross the Sierra Nevada, they should either turn around or expect to do a very long loop around the range's southern edge.

Very near where U.S. Highway 395 crosses from California into Nevada, motorists are treated to a close look at Topaz Lake.
