Life is precious. Be safe.

We live on a complex and beautiful planet that is dependent on many individual things coming together to sustain life. Likewise, at Caltrans, individual divisions all come together for a common goal. We exercise sound judgment to be good stewards of the state’s money. And now, as spring approaches and the cold of the day gives way to warmer weather, we embrace the challenges that lie ahead.

We receive 86,400 seconds every day to live our lives and make decisions, and it is up to us how we spend this time. We cannot carry even one second over to the next day, making time our greatest treasure.

For this reason, we place safety as our top priority at Caltrans. Safety does not happen because someone tells us to be safe or because it is written down somewhere in a book. Safety happens because it is our life, our time. As spring slowly closes in, if we ever needed a reason to be safe, it is because we want another 86,400 seconds to spend with loved ones or fishing or hunting or golfing or playing tennis or going to church or on hundreds of other things. May teamwork and safety go hand-in-hand this spring. May it be that everyone continues to go home safe every day!
