Interstate 15 Auxiliary Lanes Project City of Temecula
October 2025
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is continuing work on the I-15 Traffic Improvement Project. The $33.8 million project includes:
- Building new auxiliary lanes
- Widening shoulders at Empire Creek Bridge
- Expanding the Rancho California Road on-ramps
- Installing a sound wall and guardrails
- Making other roadway and safety upgrades
New Lanes Will Connect:
- Northbound I-15: Rancho California Rd to Winchester Rd
- Southbound I-15: Winchester Rd to Rancho California Rd
- Southbound I-15: Rancho California Rd to Temecula Parkway
Upcoming Closure:
From Friday, December 12, at 10 p.m. to Monday, December 15, at 4 a.m., the southbound Rancho California Road on-ramp will be fully closed for asphalt paving work (a total of about 54 hours).
Work Schedule:
- Day Work: Monday–Friday, 6 a.m.–2:30 p.m. (behind safety barriers)
- Activities: building retaining walls, excavation, backfilling, and related work
- Night Work: 9 p.m.–7 a.m.
- Activities: building concrete and center barriers, repairing channels, and bridge maintenance
Traffic Impacts:
- Night lane closures in both directions of I-15, with at least one lane open each way
- Ramp closures at:
- Northbound/Southbound Rancho California Rd.
- Southbound SR-79/Winchester Rd.
- Signs will be posted in advance to alert drivers
Project Status:
The project is currently ahead of schedule and expected to finish by early 2026.
Please drive carefully and watch for workers and construction equipment. Work may be rescheduled or canceled due to weather or material availability.

Work operations include realignment and setting k-rail barriers along the project zone. Drivers, please keep in mind there are various projects in the area ongoing in coordination with the local city and transportation agencies. We ask and thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation in getting these projects completed in the safest manner possible.
Law enforcement will be monitoring traffic for safety protocol. Please be mindful of construction area speed limits and plan ahead for delays.
Drivers, please note Changeable Message Signs placed ahead of work areas alerting public about roadwork ahead. Plan ahead for delays near the work area!
