Project Overview

The project spans approximately one mile of Interstate 5 (I-5), from the Empire Avenue Undercrossing (UC) to the Cohasset Street UC in the cities of Burbank and Los Angeles. Caltrans will replace and restore damaged and unstable pavement within the project limits.

Benefits

Caltrans will rehabilitate pavements along two lanes on both northbound (NB) and southbound (SB) I-5 to improve pavement sustainability, ride quality and safety. The work totals $23.2 million.

Schedule

Construction is scheduled from winter 2025/2026 through summer 2027.

Extended Weekend Closures

Extended weekend lane closures (55 hours) last from 10 p.m. Friday night to 5 a.m. Monday morning. During these closures I-5 could be reduced to two or three lanes in either direction depending on the project's needs. Full freeway closures may take place between the hours of 1 a.m. and 5 a.m.

January 2026

  • Jan. 23 – 26: Northbound I-5 reduced to two lanes between project limits
  • Jan. 30 – Feb. 2: Northbound I-5 reduced to two lanes between project limits

February 2026

  • Feb. 6 – 9: Northbound I-5 reduced to two lanes between project limits
  • Feb. 20 – 23: Southbound I-5 reduced to two lanes between project limits
  • Feb. 27 – Mar. 2: Southbound I-5 reduced to two lanes between project limits

Due to weather or operational reasons, the schedule is subject to change including the times and dates, the number of closures and other details.

FAQs

Q: How will motorists be impacted by the work?

A: In order to preserve and extend the pavement life, there will be about six extended weekend lane closures (55 hours) lasting from 10 p.m. Friday night to 5 a.m. Monday morning. During these closures I-5 could be reduced to two or three lanes in either direction depending on the project's needs.

These closures will not take place during holidays or special events.

Motorists can expect nighttime lane closures within the project limits as well as occasional full freeway closures between the hours of 1 a.m. and 5 a.m.

In addition, the following ramps and connectors may close as early as 9 p.m. Friday and reopen before 5 a.m. Monday

Southbound and northbound I-5 on- and off-ramps at the following locations:

  • Burbank Boulevard
  • Empire Avenue/San Fernando Boulevard
  • Buena Vista Street
  • Hollywood Way

Connectors

  • Westbound SR-134 to northbound I-5

All work is subject to change due to weather and construction-related issues. Residents and businesses near the project may experience noise, vibrations and dust associated with construction activities.

Q: Who is the contractor for this project?

A: The contractor for this project is Security Paving Company, Inc.

Q: How do I receive the latest information about closures and detours?

A: Throughout the project, the contractor will place multiple message signs along the detour route to direct traffic and alert motorists of upcoming closures. In addition, detour routes and full closure notifications will be publicized on social media.

Q: Will detour and closure signs be posted?

A: Yes. Signs will be posted at the start and end of the construction zone. Signs alerting drivers that there may be temporary closures will also be at ramps in the construction zone. Electronic changeable message signs with detour and closure information will be posted at various locations around the construction zone during construction hours. Beyond the specific work zone area, Caltrans will be placing message signs along nearby routes to help divert traffic during the extended weekend, lane closures.

Q: How many miles of lanes are being replaced?

A: Approximately 3.72 lane miles will be replaced for this project.

Q: Will construction be paused during special events and holidays?

A: Construction projects follow moratoriums put in place during special events, holidays, etc. Caltrans works with its partners to determine moratoriums for special events including the 2026 World Cup and 2027 Superbowl.
