17 More Extended Weekend Lane Closures Planned

Los Angeles County: Caltrans (District 7) will be conducting a 55-hour extended weekend lane closure operation on northbound Interstate 605 (I-605) between Firestone Boulevard in Norwalk and I-5 in Downey for paving the weekend of Friday night, September 27 to Monday morning, September 30. This will not be a 55-hour long full freeway closure. The closures are subject to change and are scheduled as follows:

On northbound I-605 from Firestone Boulevard to I-5:

·      All northbound lanes will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday, September 27 to 4:01 a.m. Saturday morning, September 28 to place k-rail and temporary striping.

·      Two northbound lanes will be open to traffic from 4:01 a.m. Saturday, September 28 to 11 p.m. Sunday, September 29.

·      All northbound lanes will be closed again from 11 p.m. Sunday, September 29 to 5:01 a.m. Monday, September 30 to remove k-rail and restripe the freeway.

·      All northbound lanes will reopen to the public by 5:01 a.m. on Monday, September 30.

·      The eastbound I-105 connector to northbound I-605 will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday, September 27 to 5:01 a.m. Monday, September 30.

·      The Firestone Boulevard and Florence Avenue on-ramps to northbound I-605 will be closed starting as early as 7 p.m. Friday, September 27 to 5:01 a.m. Monday, September 30.

Traffic will be detoured via local arterial routes during the hours of the full freeway closure. Please refer to attached detour map / flyer. This section of I-605 carries more than a quarter of a million vehicles per day on average. Caltrans urges motorists to avoid the area during construction and use alternate freeways where possible, including northbound I-110, I-5, I-710 and State Route 57.

Please drive through the construction zone with extreme caution and obey speed limits as we improve your freeway.

Seventeen more extended weekend closures are scheduled in conjunction with this segment of the Super 605 freeway corridor improvement project, sometimes over consecutive weekends and probably extending into 2025. Dates for those closures are not available, yet. Regularly scheduled overnight lane closures for two other segments will be distributed in separate news releases.

This work is part of the Super 605 freeway corridor project to rehabilitate I-605 from Long Beach to the San Gabriel Valley. A total of $260 million in construction costs is funded with $238 million from the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), and more than $20.5 million from Senate Bill (SB) 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017.

The contractors are CA Rasmussen Inc., Vanguard Construction Inc., Peterson Chase General Engineering Construction, Inc., and Meyers & Sons Construction. Caltrans reminds drivers to “Be Work Zone Alert” and to “Slow for the Cone Zone.”  Real-time closures at Caltrans QuickMap.
