Crews will begin bridge upgrades on US 101 at Alvarado Street, Santa Monica Boulevard and First Street; and SR-110 at Avenue 60
LOS ANGELES - Caltrans crews will begin lane modifications Oct. 20 near four bridges, three on State Route 110 (SR-110) and one on U.S. 101, to prepare for completing bridge rail upgrade work.
Motorists will notice the following changes at or near these bridges:
· US 101 at Alvarado Street
o Northbound and southbound bus lane reduced to one lane
· US 101 at Santa Monica Boulevard
o Northbound reduced up to three lanes at the Santa Monica Boulevard overcrossing
o Southbound reduced up to two lanes at Santa Monica Boulevard overcrossing
· US 101 at First Street
o Northbound and southbound: Three lanes will remain open in each direction, but the width of each lane will be reduced from just north of the First Street off-ramp to just north of the Fourth Street on-ramp
· SR-110/Arroyo Seco Parkway at Avenue 60
o Northbound: The Avenue 60 off-ramp will be closed
Motorists will notice construction activities near these bridges during daytime hours starting Monday through Friday, Oct. 17.
The above lane reductions and modifications will begin Oct. 20. Additionally, the posted speed limit will be reduced by 10 mph in each of the four construction zones. These changes will remain until the work is completed.
Overnight work on each bridge will begin as early as Oct. 20. Generally, working hours are between 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. weekdays. During this time, intermittent on- and off-ramp closures may take place. Signs alerting motorists will be posted.
Long-term closures of the on-ramp will be required at the SR-110 Avenue 60 location. Caltrans will give at least two weeks' notice for the long-term ramp closure.
Closures and lane reductions are subject to change due to weather or operational reasons. Specific schedules will be shared in advance. Motorists are advised to plan ahead, use caution near construction zones and expect potential delays. For real-time updates and additional information, please visit the Caltrans Quickmap.
This $15.8 million project is necessary to upgrade existing bridge rails to current standards and increase the durability and longevity of each structure. Crews will also update signage, streetlights and traffic signals at bridge locations. The Santa Monica and Alvarado Street bridges will include updated sidewalks and ADA facilities.
The project is anticipated to be completed at the end of 2027.
Caltrans reminds motorists to "Be Work Zone Alert" and "Slow for the Cone Zone."
