Why not build a roundabout at the intersection?

A roundabout, aka traffic circle, is an intersection where traffic travels around a central island in a counterclockwise direction. Vehicles entering or exiting the roundabout must yield to vehicles, bicyclists, and pedestrians.

Caltrans could study a roundabout as a means of calming traffic and increasing safety at the Verano 12/Intersection.  However, roundabouts have a bigger footprint than a typical intersection, which would require the acquisition of additional right of way – a lengthy process. Both Phase I and Phase II improvements could be finished while a roundabout was still in the design process.
