101 Express Project Sound Walls

Sound Wall Removal/Relocation

As part of the SM 101 Express Lanes Project, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will remove and relocate sections of sound walls in the City of San Mateo, adjacent to northbound U.S. 101. The sound walls will be rebuilt to their existing lengths and heights. Caltrans does not plan to remove sound walls in any other locations for this project. The locations where sound walls are being relocated are shown on the aerial photos below. Caltrans has been in regular contact with the City of San Mateo and neighboring residents to provide updates on the project and to address questions and concerns.

Newbridge Avenue to Just Past Dakota Avenue

Removal of the sound wall on South Bayshore Boulevard adjacent to U.S. 101, from Newbridge Avenue to just north of Dakota Avenue, began April 2020. This section of the sound wall will be relocated and rebuilt by Auguet 2020.

Traffic/Parking Restrictions

Nearby residents and travelers can expect to see construction crews during the day from 8 AM to 5 PM. Crews will access sound wall areas from local roadways adjacent to the freeway in San Mateo. Short-term lane closures (one-way traffic) may occur periodically on South Bayshore Boulevard during construction hours. No full road closures are anticipated as part of this work. After 5 PM, the road will be restored to two-way traffic. To allow for construction staging, on-street parking will be restricted on South Bayshore Boulevard from Newbridge Avenue to just north of Dakota Avenue beginning late March 2020 through August 2020.

 2nd Avenue to Monte Diablo Avenue

Removal of the sound wall on South Bayshore Boulevard adjacent to U.S. 101, from 2nd Avenue to Monte Diablo Avenue, will begin July 2020. This work will include relocating the sound wall and the sewer line. This section of the sound wall will be relocated and rebuilt by January 2021. No service disruptions are anticipated as part of the sewer work.

Sewer work will occur at night for several weeks during the overall construction duration Caltrans will make every effort to minimize noise during the nighttime construction. Additional details regarding nighttime work will be provided in the weekly construction update. Crews will access sound wall areas from local roadways adjacent to the freeway in San Mateo. Monte Diablo Avenue to Dore Avenue

Removal of the sound wall on North Bayshore Boulevard adjacent to U.S. 101, from Monte Diablo Avenue to Dore Avenue, began March 2020. This work will include relocating the sound wall and the sewer line. This section of the sound wall will be rebuilt by October 2020. No sewer service disruptions are anticipated as part of the work.

Dore Avenue to East Poplar Avenue

Removal of the sound wall on North Bayshore Boulevard adjacent to U.S. 101, from Dore Avenue to East Poplar Avenue, began April 2020. This section of the sound wall will be rebuilt by August 2020.

Beginning the week of May 17th, construction crews will be performing pile driving in this area as part of sound wall reconstruction. Nearby residents and travelers can expect to see construction crews from 8:00 AM to 5:00PM, Monday through Friday. Pile driving is anticipated to be completed the week of June 7th.
These activities are expected to be intermittent throughout each day of construction.

What To Expect

  • Noise and vibration from pile driving as well as other common construction related sounds such as back-up alarms
  • Water trucks being used to minimize dust during work hours
  • Traffic cones and flaggers to ensure safety of travelers

  • Temporary noise and dust increase from sound wall removal/relocation activities, during the day and/or night
  • Temporary change in freeway views from adjacent local roadways while sound walls are down
  • Little to no change in freeway views once sound walls are rebuilt
