Emergency Barrier Repair

Project Overview

Map of proposed repair work and detour routes for emergency barrier repair on US 101 and Eastbound 80.

The Emergency Barrier Repair project is the first of the five projects to get underway. One critical component to the Emergency Barrier Repair, is the Bayshore 1-80 and Central Freeway US-101 viaduct. This is a vital transportation artery that requires urgent barrier repairs to ensure the safety and reliability of the structure. Following a comprehensive investigation to assess corrosion of the suspension cable to assess its current condition and prevent future deterioration, engineers identified significant wear and damage, highlighting the necessity for immediate repairs. The repair and investigative efforts are part of a broader commitment to maintaining safe and reliable infrastructures.

This emergency barrier project is a broad undertaking which will involve replacing the suspender ropes and tower doors on the West Span, crucial components that bears the load and maintain the structural integrity of the viaduct. Work will consist of replacing damaged concrete barrier and tubular railing (see images below) at approx. 15 locations along northbound the US-101, Central and 1-80 Bayshore freeways which require significant repairs. The repairs which begin in September 2024, will be scheduled into incremental projects spanning throughout 2025. These repairs will require multiple closures of northbound and southbound US-101 as well as the westbound and eastbound 1-80 connector in San Francisco. Project duration is 6 months.

Motorists are advised to expect potential traffic disruptions during the project’s duration as crews work to complete the repairs with minimal impact. These efforts ensure that San Francisco freeways remain a safe and dependable route for everyone. Caltrans D4’s public affairs team will keep the public aware of all closures, repair schedules, detours and alternate routes, and other critical information pertaining to these repairs through our social media channels, web site, and traffic advisories.

Schedule

The first of these closures occurs the week of September 6, 2024.
