Carquinez Bridge Current and Planned Projects

Caltrans is committed to maintaining and improving safety, reliability, and connectivity along the Carquinez Bridge. Several ongoing and upcoming projects are currently in progress to repair bridge infrastructure and prepare for future open road tolling operations.

Below is an overview of current and planned work:


Project: I-80 Westbound Carquinez (Al Zampa) Bridge Deck Rehabilitation

Location: In Contra Costa and Solano Counties on Interstate 80 Post Miles Start CC-80-PM R13.8 to R14.1 &
SOL-80-PM R0.0 to R0.4

Work Summary: This project is under the toll bridge program and is an In-House Design. The project will replace the top course of the existing AC wearing surface on the orthotropic steel deck to improve rideability and preserve the bridge structure. This project will provide a smoother and safer driving surface while extending the service life of this critical I-80 connection.

Upcoming Projects

Project: Open Road Tolling (ORT)

Location: I-80 at the Carquinez Bridge Toll Plaza (Solano County)

Scope of Work:

  • Remove existing toll booths
  • Install temporary tolling system
  • Prepare for gantry installation

Purpose: This project will transition the Carquinez Bridge to a modern, cashless tolling system, improving traffic flow and reducing congestion.
