Interstate 680 and State Route 238 Separation Bridge Rehabilitation Project
Mission San Jose (680/238) Separation on Northbound and Southbound I-680 in Fremont
Caltrans began work on the I-680 Mission San Jose (680/238) Separation Bridge Deck Rehabilitation Project on northbound and southbound I-680 at Mission San Jose (680/238) Separation in Fremont, in April, 2025, with an estimated completion in Winter 2025. The project will improve safety and extend the life of the bridge by resurfacing the bridge deck, repair bridge approach slabs and replace the concrete barrier.
During construction work times, drivers should expect lane closures, shifting traffic patterns, and possible delays. Work is weather and schedule permitting.
Current Work Schedule
Intermittent nightly closuresMonday to Friday: 8:00 PM – 5:00 AM
During these hours, motorist should expect ramp and lanes to be closed to traffic. Motorists should plan and use alternate routes. Caltrans thanks the public for their patience and cooperation as we continue to improve California's transportation network.
Upcoming Closures
Caltrans is scheduled to close one direction of Interstate 680 at the I-680 and Mission San Jose (SR-238) Separation/Overpass in Fremont for two consecutive weekends to perform critical bridge and pavement work. Southbound I-680 will close the weekend of July 11, 2025, followed by Northbound I-680 the weekend of July 18, 2025.
These 55-hour closures are necessary to safely and efficiently complete key construction activities, including full bridge deck resurfacing and approach slab repairs. This phase of work involves heavy machinery and the resurfacing of the entire bridge deck. This work must be performed without live traffic to ensure worker and motorists safety. Concentrating these operations during weekend closures helps reduce the overall duration and impact of the project.
During these weekend closures, only one direction of travel on I-680 will be closed at a time with detours set in place. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and use alternative routes.
Construction is already underway in preparation for these closures. After the major bridge and overlay work is completed, additional work will continue during nighttime closures through Spring 2026, including pavement striping, barrier installation, and other finishing elements. Please note all work is weather dependent and scheduling dependent.
Caltrans thanks the public for their patience and cooperation as we continue to improve California's transportation network
