Map showing the project limits along Westbound State Route 37 in Vallejo where Caltrans has proposed installing variable message signs, a queue detection system, and lighting.

Project Description

This project proposes a Variable Message Sign (VMS) system — consisting of
Changeable Message Signs (CMS), a queue detection system, and lighting along Westbound
(WB) State Route (SR) 37.

Purpose and Need

To warn motorists of possible traffic congestion, collisions, and other incidents to reduce the
frequency of rear-end collisions on this segment of WB SR 37.

There has been a total of 105 collisions in five years within project limits. The actual Fatal +
Injury (F+I) collision rates for this segment of highway are approximately 0.41 per million
vehicle miles (MVM) and 0.07 MVM greater than Statewide average rates for similar
facilities. The crest vertical curve on the existing bridge is deficient in stopping sight
distance according to the current version of the Highway Design Manual.
