SOMA Fifth Street Tree Nursery

Project Overview

The Fifth Street Tree Nursery project will convert a highly visible, declining parcel of land at the Fifth Street-State Route 80 Interchange to an active tree nursery and education in cooperation with the City of San Francisco Bureau of Urban Forestry and their non-profit partners. A second parcel in the same area will be developed as a small dog park. This interchange serves as a primary entry and exit point to San Francisco, with direct access to the Bay Bridge. Ongoing unsheltered encampments have damaged and stripped the roadside, leaving this large and highly visible site dilapidated and uninviting to the community and tourists. Caltrans partnered with the City of San Francisco to create this unique beautification project that serves the needs of the community. Caltrans will work with the City to build the necessary infrastructure at this location. Enhancements at the Fifth Street-State Route 80 Interchange include:

  • Installation of decorative security fencing and gates
  • Installation of public art
  • Creation of driveways for vehicle access
  • Preparation of ground surface
  • Installation of electrical and water service

This project would achieve community and Caltrans goals for beautifying this lot, improving perceived safety and aesthetics, and highlighting urban forestry efforts towards resiliency and sustainability.
